Microblogging platform Moajor Twitter has announced that it is launching ‘Unmentioning’ feature, which lets users remove themselves from conversations.
The platform has deployed several features regarding the mentions including anti-harassment Safety Mode. Earlier, Elon Musk terminated the USD 44 billion deal to buy Twitter while Twitter later announced it was going to sue the Tesla CEO.

Centre has come up with new social media laws because the companies had violated Indians’ constitutional rights. The government brought back a proposal to amend the rules that govern social media companies. It also includes a plan to set up a new government-appointed committee.

WhatsApp India announced an initiative named SMBSaathi Utsav that aims to support small businesses by helping them adopt digital mediums such as the WhatsApp Business App.
SMBSaathi Utsav commenced with a pilot in Jaipur where over 500 small businesses are being trained on running their business online. The initiative was launched in collaboration with Josh Talks.

Instagram has announced the launch of ‘Take a Break’ in all countries, including India, to empower people to make informed decisions about the way they are spending their time.

ऑस्ट्रेलियाई सरकार ने ‘Social Media (Basic Expectations and Defamation) Bill 2021’ का मसौदा जारी किया। इस बिल का उद्देश्य सोशल मीडिया कंपनियों को उनके प्लेटफॉर्म पर पोस्ट की गई सामग्री के लिए जवाबदेह ठहराना और यूजर्स को ट्रोल्स से बचाना है। यह सुधार सोशल मीडिया कंपनियों को प्रकाशक के रूप में मानेंगे और वे इस दायित्व से बच सकते हैं यदि वे जानकारी प्रदान करते हैं ताकि पीड़ित ट्रोल की पहचान कर सके और उसके खिलाफ मानहानि की कार्यवाही शुरू हो सके।

The Australian government released the draft of ‘Social Media (Basic Expectations and Defamation) Bill 2021’.
The Bill aims at holding social media companies accountable for the content posted on their platforms, and protecting users from trolls. The reforms will consider social media companies as publishers and they can avoid this liability if they provide information so that the victim can identify and begin defamation proceedings against the troll.

Instagram has launched two campaigns named ‘Safe Stree’ and ‘My Kanoon’ to provide online safety to young users.
Instagram has partnered with a youth media and insights-company and a women’s rights and laws platform to launch ‘Safe Stree’. It aims to spread awareness about the safety features available on the platform. ‘My Kanoon’ will inform users about the legal rights and protection available to them.

Former US President Donald Trump has recently announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social.
Though he was active in social media, Mr Trump was banned from Twitter and suspended from Facebook after his supporters stormed the US Capitol. Last year, Twitter and Facebook even started deleting some of his posts or labelled them as ‘misleading’.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has launched its account on social media platform Telegram to counter fake news. It was launched as ‘PIB Fact Check’, which is one of the few government entities to have a telegram channel, and aims to verify information related to the Centre and disseminate to its subscribers. Earlier, fake channels were being run on Telegram in the name of fact check.
