Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the 2017 Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema. She received the award from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon at the Vaisakhi Dinner organised by the British Sikh Association at the Lancaster Hotel on March 24, 2017. Her noted films include “Bhaji on the Beach”, “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Bride and Prejudice”. Chadha’s latest film, “Viceroy’s House” tells the true story of the final five months of British rule in India and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

The World Theatre Day (WTD) is observed every year on March 27 to draw attention to the power of the stage. The day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the world organization for performing arts. The day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of the art form “theatre”, and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognized its value to the people and to the individual and have not yet realized its potential for economic growth.

Gauri Singh (14) from Rajasthan has become the first Indian girl to explore the route from Sea Link near Worli Koliwada to the Gateway of India. She took over 6 hours 30 minutes to complete the 36 km long distance route. Singh is a resident of Udaipur and a class 8th student.

El Salvador, Central America’s smallest nation, has become the world’s first country to ban metals mining nationwide following a long-running dispute with a Canadian-Australian company over an environmentally questioned gold project. For this, El Salvador passed a law that prohibits all metal mining in an attempt to protect the environment and natural resources.

The 2017 National conference on Communicating India has held in New Delhi on April 5, 2017. The three main themes for the conference are ‘Telling India’s story to the world’, ‘Communicating via Journalism’ and ‘Dialogue with Diaspora’. The one-day conference has been organized by the Vivekananda International Foundation in collaboration with the India Media Centre, University of Westminster, London, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication with the association of Prasar Bharati.

Ikutaro Kakehashi (87), the Roland founder and digital music pioneer, has passed away on April 1, 2017 in Japan. The Japanese engineer was best known for founding Roland Corporation in 1972 as well as his roles in the development of Roland drum machines and the MIDI standard. He invented a series of drum machines and synthesisers such as the TR-808, TR-909 and TB-303 that have been used by some of music’s biggest names since the mid-1970s, from Prince to Kanye West, New Order to Dr Dre.

India has recently signed sport partnership agreement with Australia to increase cooperation in sports. The India-Australia Sports Partnership would facilitate exchange of athletes, coaches, technical officials, sports scientists between the two countries. It will advance India-Australia cooperation in four areas, athlete and coach training and development, sport science, sport governance and integrity and grassroots participation. Under the new partnership, Victoria University and the University of Canberra would work with India to assist in the establishment of a National Sports University (NSU) similar to the Australian Institute of Sport.

The Arabian Travel Market (ATM) has started at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai from April 24, 2017. The ATM is the leading global event of the Middle East inbound and outbound travel industry. The 4-day fair will welcome over 2,600 exhibitors and an expected 30,000 visitors to the Middle East. The theme of the India Pavilion is “Yoga and Wellness”, which will depict India as a year round multi faceted tourist destination for all ages and all seasons. The pavilion will highlight medical tourism in India which is fast gaining currency both amongst Middle East and European travellers. The Indian Pavilion under the aegis of the Tourism Ministry will exhibit the grandeur of the Indian subcontinent and will provide a platform to the leading Indian tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, state governments and airlines to market India as an affordable and exotic tourist destination, which can be the basis of holistic travel experience.

Kasinadhuni Viswanath (87), the renowned actor-director, has been named for the prestigious 2016 Dada Saheb Phalke award for his outstanding contribution to the film industry. He is icon in the film industry and known for classical and traditional art, music and dance. The award will be conferred by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function on May 3 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. With this, Viswanath will become the 48th recipient of the award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema. The award carries a golden lotus, a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs and a shawl.

Shobana Kamineni, executive vice chairperson of the Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, has been appointed as first Woman President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). She succeeded Dr Naushad Forbes and will hold the position for the year 2017-18. Apart from her, Rakesh Bharti Mittal takes charge as President Designate and Uday Kotak has become the new CII Vice President. CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organisation, playing a proactive role in India’s development process.
