The Indian Navy is implementing a new 360-degree appraisal mechanism for officers being considered for promotion.
The mechanism will include peer reviews from colleagues and subordinates to evaluate an officer’s impact on their team. The feedback obtained will be analyzed by a nominated board of officers.

The IEA’s Critical Minerals Market Review 2023 was released recently at the IEA Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Summit in Paris.
It revealed that the market for critical minerals has seen remarkable growth, doubling in size over the past five years to reach $320 billion in 2022.

Recently, the Union Cabinet gave its nod to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana through an amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009.
The Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University at Mulugu District in Telangana, will be established with a funding of Rs. 889.07 crore.

The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Japan Bank for International Cooperation, JBIC have tied up to launch a 600 million US dollar India-Japan Fund.
This joint initiative will facilitate collaboration and investment between India and Japan in the field of climate and environment. Government of India will contribute 49 per cent of the corpus and the remaining 51 per cent will be contributed by JBIC.

Star Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra defended his Asian Games title with a season’s best throw of 88.88 metres.
Another Indian athlete Kishore Kumar Jena took silver with a new personal best of 87.54 metres, past the automatic qualification mark of 85.50m for next year’s Paris Olympics.

The 2023 Nobel Prize for Literature has been conferred upon Norwegian author Jon Fosse. He has received this prestigious award “for his groundbreaking plays and prose that articulate the unexpressed.”
He is known for writing variety of genres including plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children’s books and translations. His debut novel was Raudt, svart published in 1983.

Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years, firing at least 5,000 missiles rockets at it.
In retaliation to it, Israel declared a ‘war’ and launched Operation “Iron Swords” to neutralise Hamas militants in Gaza. As per the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), more than 1,000 Israelis have been killed in the war on Hamas.

NASA is preparing to launch a cutting-edge spacecraft named Psyche on a groundbreaking mission to study the asteroid named ‘16 Psyche’.
This first-of-its-kind endeavour will explore a metal-rich asteroid, providing valuable insights into the formation of rocky objects in our solar system.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October. The event was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) creation in 1874.
Theme for World Post Day 2023 is “Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future.”

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Annual Report 2022-2023 was released recently by the National Statistical Office. A decreasing Trend in Unemployment Rate (UR) for persons of age 15 years and above was noted.
In rural areas, Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) increased from 50.7% in 2017-18 to 60.8% in 2022-23 while for urban areas it increased from 47.6% to 50.4%. In rural areas, Worker Population Ratio (WPR) increased from 48.1% in 2017-18 to 59.4% in 2022-23 while for urban areas it increased from 43.9% to 47.7%.
