The 27th annual UN meeting on climate, COP27 (Conference of Parties) will take place in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt from 6th to 18th November.
This will be the fifth time a Climate Conference is being hosted in Africa. COP27 will focus on three main areas, reducing emissions, helping countries to prepare and deal with climate change and securing technical support and funding for developing countries for climate activities.

The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) has approved genetically modified (GM) mustard for commercial cultivation,
Technically called Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11 (DMH-11), it was developed by the Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants of Delhi University and the National Dairy Development Board and partly funded by the department of biotechnology.

‘2022 NDC Synthesis Report’ from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) shows countries are bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward.
It also warns that these efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

USA’s NASA has formed a 16-member team to investigate ‘unidentified aerial phenomena’ (UAPs) or ‘unidentified flying objects’ (UFOs).
UAP refers to things in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or natural phenomena. The study will last for a period of nine months. The team seeks to learn how data gathered from various sources can be analysed to understand about the mystery of UAPs.

Notes:
The UNSC’s counter-terrorism meeting will be hosted in Mumbai and Delhi in the month of October. The overarching theme of the meeting would be ‘Countering the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.’
The focus is on rapid development and increasing threat of use for terrorist purposes of 3 technologies – 1) internet, including social media, 2) new payment technologies and fundraising methods, 3) unmanned aerial systems, including drones.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), India’s insurance regulator has set up a 15-member committee for increasing health insurance coverage.
The 15-member committee is headed by Rakesh Joshi, member of IRDAI. It has been set up for two years and it will have representatives from the healthcare and insurance industries.

Apple Inc announced it would make fresh investments to set up solar and wind projects in Europe and called on its suppliers to decarbonize business operations.
With this construction in Europe, the company aims to power all Apple devices on the continent with low-carbon electricity. The company in 2020 pledged to remove carbon emissions from its entire business.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced equal match fee for both men and women cricket players of India.
As per new rules, the payment for Tests will be 15 lakh rupees, 6 lakh rupees for ODIs, and 3 lakh rupees for T-20. This is regarded as BCCI’s first step towards tackling gender- discrimination.

Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF) are participating in a bilateral exercise, named ‘Garuda VIl’ at Air Force Station Jodhpur.
In this exercise, the IAF is participating with Su-30 MKI, Rafale, LCA Tejas and Jaguar fighter aircraft, as well as the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Mi-17 helicopters. This is the seventh edition of the bilateral exercise.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that India will contribute USD 500,000 to the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter Terrorism (UNOCT) this year.
This aims to aid capacity-building support to member states in combating terrorism. Representatives from all 15 member nations of the UN Security Council attended the meeting, hosted by India in New Delhi and Mumbai.
