The 35-year-old Serbian beat Croatia’s Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-4 in the final to win his first title since Wimbledon in July. He was handed a large three-foot-tall trophy.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) slashed its forecast for global trade volume growth to 1 per cent from 3.4 per cent estimated earlier.
The Geneva-based body said that world trade may lose momentum in the second half of 2022 and remain subdued in 2023. WTO revised upward its merchandise trade growth forecast for 2022, to 3.5 per cent from its April estimate of 3 per cent.

Tribal bodies from Jharkhand threatened to launch an agitation across five states if its demand for ‘Sarna’, a distinct religious category, was not heeded by the Centre.
The indigenous people are nature-worshippers and are neither Hindus, nor Muslims or Christians. The tribal people are residing in 250 blocks of 50 districts in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and West Bengal.

The first European female commander on the International Space Station is the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.
She answered young girls’ questions accompanied by a lookalike Barbie doll, as a part of a project aimed at inspiring young girls to start careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Ben S Bernanke, the former chair of the US Federal Reserve, Douglas W Diamond and Philip H Dybvig of USA for research into banks and financial crises.
As per the committee, ‘the laureates have provided a foundation for our modern understanding of why banks are needed, why they’re vulnerable, and what to do about it’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Phase I of the Mahakal Lok Project to the nation at Shri Mahakal Lok in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
The total cost of the entire project is around ₹850 crore. The Mahakal Path contains 108 stambhs (pillars) which depict Anand Tandav Swaroop (Dance form) of Lord Shiva.

The Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank is scheduled to be held in Washington D.C in October 2022.
India’s Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in the USA on an official visit to attend the annual meetings. She will also hold one-on-one meetings with leaders and heads of OECD, European Commission and UNDP as well as several other countries.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched Toyota’s first of its kind pilot project on Flexi-Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FFV-SHEV) in India.
The vehicles are said to run on 100 per cent petrol as well as 20 to 100 per cent blended ethanol and electric power.

The Union Cabinet approved projects worth over ₹13,000 crore, including a Rs 6,600 crore-scheme for developing physical and social infrastructure in the North-East.
The ‘Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE)’ will be implemented during the remaining four years of the 15th Finance Commission from 2022-23 to 2025-26. It is a Central sector scheme and will be administered by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

Notes:
The Supreme Court had struck down the Section 66A of the Information and Technology Act, 2000 in the year 2015.
Recently, the apex court directed that no person should be prosecuted under Section 66A of the IT Act. Section 66A gave power to the government to arrest and imprison an individual for ‘offensive and menacing’ online posts.
