The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been jointly awarded to Carolyn Bertozzi, Morton Meldal and Barry Sharpless for their work on snipping molecules together.
Also known as ‘Click chemistry’, it is related to the process of linking together molecules like those in living cells. Their work is used to explore cells, track biological processes and can be applied in cancer treatment drugs.

International Solar Alliance’s Fifth Assembly is to be hosted by India in New Delhi on October 17-20, 2022.
Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy RK Singh unveiled the curtain raiser to the Fifth Assembly of ISA. India holds the office of the President of the ISA Assembly. The Fifth Assembly will deliberate on key initiatives of ISA on three critical issues: energy access, energy security, and energy transition.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi gave his assent to an ordinance to ban online gambling and regulate online gaming in the state.
With this, the Tamil Nadu prohibition of online gambling and regulation of online games ordinance, 2022 came into effect. Under the regulations, local online games providers can provide service only after registration which will be valid for three years. They shall not provide any online gaming service or allow playing of any online game of chance specified in the Schedule with money or other stakes.

The country’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp entered into the electric vehicle segment with the launch of its first electric scooter VIDA V1.
The VIDA V1 will compete with the likes of Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather Energy, Hero Electric, Ola Electric among others. Hero Motocorp announced to invest USD 60 million in US-based Zero Motorcycles to jointly develop electric motorcycles. It already has a stake Ather Energy.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri co-chaired the ministerial dialogue of US-India strategic clean energy partnership (USISCEP) with US energy secretary in Washington DC.
The Union Minister will also interact with World Bank officials on climate resilient urban infrastructure. The revamped USISCEP was launched in 2021 in accordance with the US-India climate and clean energy agenda 2030 partnership.

ICICI Bank has launched Smart Wire, an online solution to help its customers carry out SWIFT-based inward remittances in a faster and seamless manner.
The Smart Wire facility will allow NRIs and resident customers to undertake inward remittance transactions in an online mode.

India’s Chandrayaan-2 X-ray spectrometer ‘CLASS’ has mapped an abundance of sodium on the moon for the first time. It has been hovering around the Moon since 2019.
The new findings provide a scope to study surface-exosphere interaction on the moon that would aid development of similar models for mercury and other airless bodies in our solar system.

SEBI has granted its in-principle approval to Bombay Stock Exchange *BSE) for introducing a social stock exchange as a separate segment.
Social stock exchange will enable the listing of non-profit organisations and for-profit social enterprises that are engaged in 15 broad eligible social activities approved by the market regulator. These social entities can raise funds through equity, issue of zero-coupons zero-principal bonds, mutual funds, social impact funds and development impact bonds.

India ace Hockey Player Harmanpreet Singh was named the FIH Player of the Year in the men’s category for the second successive time.
He became only the fourth player to win the Player of the Year award (men’s category) in consecutive years. Albers of Netherlands have been named the FIH Player of the Year 2021-22 in the women’s category. Harmanpreet scored 18 goals from 16 games, with two hat-tricks, in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-’22.

On 9 October 1946, the Indian government had established the Indian Foreign Service for India’s diplomatic, consular and commercial representation overseas.
After independence, there was a transition of the Foreign and Political Department into the new Ministry of External Affairs. To mark the occasion, the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Day is celebrated on October 9 every year.
