According to the latest Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII), India has moved up six places to rank 123 out of 161 countries for reducing inequality.
Norway leads the CRII followed by Germany and Australia. India continues to be among the lowest performers in health spending. The Index is prepared by Oxfam International and Development Finance International (DFI), which measures governments’ policies and actions in three areas: public services (health, education, and social protection), taxation and workers’ rights.

The Union Power Ministry has started the process setting up transmission systems for renewable energy zones (REZ) with 66.5 GW capacity by the current year to integrate non-fossil fuel energy sources with the national grid.
It will also establish 13 RE management centres (REMC) to address the variability of generation. A transmission system to integrate an additional 52 GW potential REZ by 2026-27 is also being planned. The Power Minister briefed the steps being taken towards creating a ‘One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency and One National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC)’.

Ace footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has reached 700 club career goals after scoring in Manchester United’s Premier League win over Everton.
Ronaldo’s 700 goals have come in 944 games for Sporting Lisbon, United, Real Madrid and Juventus. He is also the highest men’s international scorer with 117 goals in 189 games for Portugal. As many as 129 of Ronaldo’s club goals were scored from the penalty spot.

A pod of 240 pilot whales has lost their lives after being stranded on New Zealand’s Pitt Island in the Pacific Ocean.
The pod of whales has been found on the Chatham Islands archipelago, which consists of Pitt Island and Chatham Island with minimal human presence. Earlier, 215 whales died following a mysterious beaching event in the country.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed each year on October 13. The day is aimed to raise awareness about and acknowledge the progress in preventing the loss of lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure during various disasters.
The theme of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 is ‘Early Warning for All’, which is Target G of the Sendai Framework. The ‘Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030’ includes concrete actions to protect development gains from the risk of disaster.

India’s nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant on October 14, 2022 carried out a successful launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in the Bay of Bengal with a “very high accuracy”. The Arihant-class submarines are nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project. They will be the first nuclear submarines designed and built by India.

Haryana has was on top position in the category of big states in the Public Affairs Index-2022. The state has emerged at the forefront in social, economic and political justice themes. It has topped among the major states with a score of 0.6948, followed by Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Karnataka among many other states. On the other hand, Sikkim has retained its position as the best-governed small state in India. The index is released by Bengaluru-based non-profit think tank Public Affairs Centre (PAC).

Goalball is a Paralympic sport, it is specially designed for blind people of a certain age. Goalball Federation of India held Goalball nationals at Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak recently. In the finals, Maharashtra beat Uttarakhand.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘DefExpo 2022’ in Gandhinagar on 19 October. With an aim to give impetus to the defence sector, India’s “biggest ever” defence exhibition – DefExpo 2022 is being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This is the 12th edition of the event that has been organised on the theme ‘Path to Pride’.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on 17th October to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty. The theme for this year is ‘Dignity For all in Practice’.
In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. According to the UN, ‘dignity’ is a fundamental right and the basis of other fundamental rights and every human being is entitled to dignity.
