Scientists on the Nekton Maldives Mission have discovered evidence of ‘The Trapping Zone’. It has been described as ‘an oasis of oceanic life’, 500 metres below the surface.
As per the country’s president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the discovery of ‘The Trapping Zone’ and the oasis of life surrounding the Maldives provides with new knowledge that will support fisheries and tourism.

Notes:
World Bank extended an unconditional loan of USD 250 million for SALT project in Andhra Pradesh. The Supporting Andhra’s Learning Transformation (SALT) project aims to improve the quality of learning for over 50 lakh students in the State.
It aims for training teachers, facilitating State-level assessment and establishing an effective education management and information system.

According to the latest Living Planet Report by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), there has been a 69 per cent decline in the wildlife populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish, across the globe in the last 50 years.
The highest decline (94 per cent) was in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. The report also emphasised that Biodiversity loss and climate crisis are intertwined. Africa recorded a 66 per cent fall in its wildlife populations from 1970-2018 and the Asia Pacific 55 per cent.

On the World Mental Health Day, Meghalaya announced the state draft mental health policy named ‘Meghalaya Mental Health and Social Care Policy’.
This is the first of its kind draft in the state and it will focus on holistic promotion of mental health. The objective of the policy is to provide universal access to mental health care by enhancing understanding of mental health.

The ‘Living Planet Report’ published by WWF stated that the Monitored wildlife population (including mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles) has seen a drop of 69% in last five decades between 1970 -2018. The cause of such decline can be attributed to drastic & devastating climate change, pollution, land & habitat degradation, diseases, invasive species & more.

The 6th Summit of Conference of Interaction & Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) held at Astana, Kazakhstan. The minister of state for External affairs Meenakshi Lekhi lead the Indian delegation at the conference. CICA is a body that works towards building peace, security & stability in Asia. It was established in 1992 by the, first president of Kazakhstan at the 47th session of UNGA.

India’s Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil scored a sensational come-from-behind victory in the men’s 10m Air rifle final, beating Italy’s Danilo Sollazzo 17-13 in a shootout, to win the gold medal at the ongoing World Championships in Cairo on October 14, 2022. India’s last World Champion in the men’s air rifle was Abhinav Bindra at Zagreb in 2006.

World Standards Day was established by international standards bodies like the International Organization for Standardization, International Electrotechnical Commission and International Telecommunication Union. The theme for World Standard Day 2022 is ‘Shared Vision For a Better World.’ It is observed to raise awareness about the importance of using standardized measurements, and technologies.

India has been ranked 123 out of 161 countries in the Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII) 2022. It has been prepared by Oxfam International and Development Finance International (DFI). It measures government policies and actions in three areas: public services (health, education, and social protection), taxation, and workers’ rights.
