Notes:
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed each year on October 13. The day is aimed to raise awareness about and acknowledge the progress in preventing the loss of lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure during various disasters.
The theme of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 is ‘Early Warning for All’, which is Target G of the Sendai Framework. The ‘Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030’ includes concrete actions to protect development gains from the risk of disaster.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 has been recently released. University of Oxford, UK has topped the rankings list for the 7th time consecutively.
It is followed by University of Harvard (US) and University of Cambridge (UK) at second and third places. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has retained the top position among Indian institutes and it is placed in the 251-300 band.

Sajan Prakash an Indian swimmer hailing from Kerala won 8 medals including 5 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze in the 36th National games 2022. He also received the ‘best male athlete’ award by Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel at Sardar Patel Aquatic Complex, Rajkot.

Recently, President Draupadi Murmu launched India’s latest super computer Param-Kamrupa, a high-performance computing cluster named after Assam’s historic kingdom of Kamrupa. This supercomputer facility has replaced Param-Ishan as the northeast region’s fastest and most powerful supercomputer. Param-Ishan was inaugurated in IIT Guwahati in 2016. Param-Kamrupa was set up at IIT Guwahati under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) – a joint initiative of the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) and the department of Science and Technology (DST). There were 15 such super computers that were deployed across the country.

Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affaris Shri Pralhad Joshi urged the public sector undertakings (PSUs) to compete with the private sector in coal mine auction and early production. Addressing the National Coal Conclave & Exhibition-2022,  the minister pointed out that despite unprecedented increase in international prices, Coal India Ltd (CIL) did not increase domestic coal price and stepped up coal proudction substantially in the recent past and managed to overcome coal shortage faced by thermal power plants.

The Prime Minister launched Indian Edge, an e-magazine on fertilisers during the PM Kisan Samman Sammelan 2022.
The magazine will provide information on domestic and international fertilizer scenarios, including recent developments, analysis of price trends, availability and consumption of fertilisers, and success stories of farmers, among others.

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) have collaborated for innovations in Financial Product and Services.
The collaboration includes leveraging deep rural reach of IPPB-Department of Posts (DoP) and enabling access to finance services to every segment of the society. IPPB shall be an active participant and partner with RBIH for its projects.

Uttar Pradesh bagged the first position in the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U) Awards 2021. It is followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at second and third place, respectively.
Gujarat saw five special category awards while Jammu and Kashmir was adjudged the ‘Best Performing UT’ alongside Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.1.23 crore houses were sanctioned under the scheme of which 64 lakh have already been completed and delivered while the rest were at various stages of completion.

State-owned REC Ltd and Power Finance Corporation have signed a pact to provide Rs 8,520.92 crore finance for setting up a 1,320 MW thermal power plant at Buxar by SJVN Thermal Private Ltd.
According to the statement, the total estimated project cost is Rs 12,172.74 crore with debt requirement of Rs 8,520.92 crore. As per the agreement, the debt requirement shall be financed by REC and PFC.

‘Police Commemoration Day’ is observed on October 21 every year, which commemorates the sacrifices of ten CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
On October 21, 1959, ten Indian policemen were killed during an attack by Chinese troops in the Hot Springs region close to Ladakh.
