As per the report, the number of poor people in India fell by about 415 million between 2005-06 and 2019-21. India has the largest number of poor people worldwide (228.9 mn) followed by Nigeria (96.7 mn).

Notes:
As per the US government-funded NGO Freedom House, India’s internet freedom score improved by two points to 51 after efforts to bridge the digital divide in the country.
India’s score was 49 in Internet Freedom in 2021. The improvement in the score is also based on reduced frequency and intensity of internet shutdowns in the country.

World Bank has recently Chairman of Court of Arbitration regarding Pakistan’s objections over India’s Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric power plants, located at Jammu and Kashmir.
India and Pakistan signed the Indus Water Treaty in 1960 after nine years of negotiations, with the World Bank being a signatory of the pact.

October 15 is marked as Global Handwashing Day across the world. It aims to increase awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.
This year’s theme is ‘Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene’. The day was founded by the Global Handwashing Partnership, a coalition of international stakeholders who work to promote handwashing with soap.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated Asia’s largest Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plant in Lehragaga, Sangrur, Punjab.
The CBG Plant at Sangrur was inaugurated with an FDI investment of Rs. 220 crores by Verbio AG, one of the top bioenergy companies in Germany. It is spread out across around 20 acres and currently produces about 6 Tons Per Day (TPD) of CBG.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has won the ‘National Intellectual Property Awards 2021 and 2022’.
The institution has been identified as the top Indian academic institution for patents filing, grants and commercialisation. This award is presented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Uttar Pradesh has recently bagged projects worth Rs 16,000 crore in the new-age sector. The government is in the process of amending its existing data centre policy to attract more private sector investors.
The state’s first data centre park is to be inaugurated in Greater Noida. The Rs 5,000 crore mega park has shared information technology (IT) activities and equipment to store, process, and disseminate information and applications.

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot gave assent to the ordinance to increase the reservation for the Scheduled Castes from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and the Scheduled Tribes from 3 per cent to 7 per cent in the state.
The Karnataka cabinet approved an ordinance for increasing the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe communities.

India finished with six medals – one gold, one silver, and four bronze at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships 2022

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) researchers have studied the interactions between microbes in the International Space Station (ISS).
One of the key findings is a microbe that resides on the ISS, was found to be beneficial to various other microorganisms but hampered the growth of Aspergillus fungus.
