Britain has signed a free trade agreement with Japan recently. This is Britain’s first bilateral deal with another nation post Brexit.
As per the deal close to 99% of Britain’s exports to Japan would be tariff free. It is expected to increase trade between the two countries by 15.2 billion pounds.

The United Nations Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was opened for signature at United Nations headquarters on 20th September 2017. Once 50 countries have ratified or acceded to it, it will enter into force.
The United Nations announced recently that 50 countries have ratified the treaty and would come into force within 90 days, by January 2021.

A fast-moving cyclone named Molave has hit the southern provinces of the Philippines. It has resulted in heavy flood in rural villages of the country.
The typhoon was blowing towards the South China Sea with sustained winds of 125 kilometres per hour. Nearly 25,000 villagers were displaced from the villages taking shelters in schools and Government buildings.

As per a recent study conducted by a group of scientists from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, the Indus Suture Zone (ISZ) in the Ladakh region, has been found to be tectonically active.
The zone, where the Indian and Asian Plates are joined, has been till date considered as a locked zone. WIHG is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology. The study has been published recently in the journal ‘Technophysics’.

Luis Arce has been elected as the new President of Bolivia. The leftist leader has secured a landslide victory in the recently conducted Presidential election.
Luis Arce served as the Economy minister for several years under the first Indigenous President, Morales. He was known for developing the boom years of the country from the mid-2000s and in reducing poverty.

Leading Public sector enterprise NTPC has topped the Indian PSUs in the ‘World’s Best Employer 2020’ list, published by Forbes.
NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited is engaged in the business of generation of electricity and allied activities. NTPC has introduced intensive digitisation and online training modules.

Sascan Meditech, a startup incubated at TiMED, a technology business incubator of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) has developed a device to screen Oral Cancer.
The handheld imaging device that can screen and detect tumours in the mouth very early stages. The technology has received an Indian patent and will be officially launched by Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja.

Notes:
Recently, the state Government of Andhra Pradesh has imposed a ban on bringing in alcohol from other states. An order for enforcing the notification has been issued by the state.
This move by the Chief Minster is seen as a measure to reduce alcohol consumption in the state and to improve the quality of people’s life.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank virtually inaugurated the DST-IIEST Solar PV Hub at IIEST, Shibpur.
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) is an Institute of National Importance under Ministry of Education and is located in the state of Kolkata. The hub will have the world class research facilities.

Notes:
The Government of India has notified that that no leather footwear can be produced, sold, traded, imported or even stocked, unless they bear the BIS mark.
The notification has been issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This move is aimed to contain import of cheaper leather products in India.
