Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on 13 November 2025, sending volcanic ash 10 km (6.2 miles) into the sky. The Geological Agency of Indonesia raised the alert system to its highest level following the eruption. It is located on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. It is part of a twin-volcano system, with Lewotobi Laki-Laki (male) and Lewotobi Perempuan (female). These are stratovolcanoes, formed by repeated lava layers. Indonesia frequently experiences volcanic eruptions as it lies on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ where tectonic activity causes earthquakes and tsunamis

United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Operation Southern Spear, a major military campaign in the Caribbean and South America. The operation targets “narco-terrorists” and is led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). Its objectives are to defend the US homeland, remove narco-terrorists from the region, and disrupt drug trafficking networks supplying cocaine to the US.

Cambridge Dictionary named ‘parasocial’ as the Word of the Year 2025 due to rising one-sided emotional bonds with celebrities, influencers and Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots. More than 6,000 new words were added in 2025, including ‘delulu’, ‘slop’, ‘skibidi’ and ‘tradwife’. The term ‘parasocial’ first appeared in 1956 when sociologists studied TV viewers’ emotional ties with on-screen personalities. In 2025, parasocial bonds grew with YouTubers, influencers and AI bots, reshaping online trust, fandom and digital behaviour.

India recently addressed the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) Roundtable at UNFCCC COP30 in Belém, Brazil, highlighting global efforts on industrial decarbonisation. LeadIT was launched in 2019 by India and Sweden with support from the World Economic Forum. It is the first global high-level initiative targeting net-zero emissions from heavy industries by 2050. It brings together countries and companies to promote public-private partnerships, finance, and best-practice sharing for an inclusive, just transition. LeadIT 2.0 (2024-26), launched at COP28, focuses on inclusive transition, low-carbon technology transfer and financial support to emerging economies. Its secretariat is hosted by the Stockholm Environment Institute, with 18 member countries and 27 companies.

Scientists recently spotted the rare ginkgo-toothed beaked whales (Mesoplodon ginkgodens) for the first time in the wild near Baja California, Mexico. This species is one of 24 beaked whale species, the second most diverse cetacean group after dolphins. It lives in tropical and temperate waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It has a robust body, small pointed flippers and two unique ginkgo-shaped teeth on the lower jaw. These whales are the deepest-diving mammals, surfacing only briefly and staying far from coastlines.

India’s Under-19 cricket team will start their 2026 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign against the United States on January 15 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The tournament will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6 with 16 teams playing 41 matches. India is placed in Group A with the USA, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, playing all group matches at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 will begin on December 2 announced by the Ministry of Education. The theme is Learn Tamil – Tamil Karkalam / Karpom Tamil to promote Tamil language across India. Valedictory function will be held at Rameswaram and a new initiative Tamil Karpom will help North Indian students learn Tamil in Tamil Nadu. More than 1400 delegates from Tamil Nadu will participate in seven categories. Delegates will go on an eight day tour covering Varanasi Prayagraj and Ayodhya with seminars cultural shows cuisine handicrafts and heritage experiences. IIT Madras and BHU are the nodal institutions with support from Uttar Pradesh Government and Central ministries

National Commission for Women has launched a new 24×7 short helpline number 14490. The number is toll free and easy to remember for women in distress across the country. It is connected to the existing NCW helpline to provide faster help without any delay. The helpline offers immediate support to women facing violence harassment or any form of distress. The initiative strengthens NCW’s efforts to ensure safety and timely assistance for women

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reported that Sanchar Saathi enabled recovery of 50,000+ lost/stolen mobiles in October 2025, with total recoveries crossing 7 lakh. Karnataka and Telangana crossed 1 lakh recoveries each; Maharashtra exceeded 80,000. Monthly recoveries rose 47% from June to October 2025, with one handset recovered every minute. The platform uses indigenous automated workflows and real-time device tracking, preventing misuse of blocked phones. Sanchar Saathi is a digital safety initiative of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which operates under the Ministry of Communications.

Andhra Pradesh State Government launched the statewide Rythanna Meekosam initiative to strengthen farmer welfare. The programme focuses on water security, demand-based farming, agri-technology, food processing, and full government support. The government has spent ₹1,000 crore in the last 18 months to improve farmer livelihoods. Agriculture supports over 60 percent of the State’s population and adds major revenue. Farmers receive help through modern machines, drones for spraying, and pest control. Food processing units are being set up to improve crop value and exports. Under Pradhan Mantri Kisan (PM-Kisan) Annadata Sukhibhava scheme, 68 lakh farmers got ₹3,200 crore support
