12th November, is observed as Public Service Broadcasting Day in India. The day commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s historic first and only visit to Broadcasting House, New Delhi, in 1947. In 2000, Union Minister Sushma Swaraj declared 12th November as Public Service Broadcasting Day. Akashvani celebrates the day with special programmes, bhajans, and events based on Gandhian philosophy. In 2023, the studio was named ‘Bapu Studio’ on the 100th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Public Service Broadcasting Day inspires broadcasters to spread Gandhi’s ideals nationwide.

Kerala has once again emerged as a Top Achiever in the national Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) ratings for 2024. The ratings were released under the Business Reforms Action Plan (BRAP) by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Kerala topped the “Fast Movers” category with a 99.1% reform implementation score, up from 91% last year. The recognition was announced at Udyog Samagam 2025 in New Delhi.

National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has launched India’s first ‘Solar on Track’ system at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad. This is the first such initiative in any Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) or Metro network in India. The system will generate 17,500 kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 16 tonnes per year. It is part of NCRTC’s goal to meet 70% of energy needs through renewables, with 5.5 MW rooftop solar already operational and a 15 MW target ahead.

United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Operation Southern Spear, a major military campaign in the Caribbean and South America. The operation targets “narco-terrorists” and is led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). Its objectives are to defend the US homeland, remove narco-terrorists from the region, and disrupt drug trafficking networks supplying cocaine to the US.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed Ethiopia’s first-ever outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD). MVD is a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic fever caused by the Marburg virus. It was first identified in 1967 in Marburg, Germany. The causative agents are Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV) of the species Orthomarburgvirus marburgense. The natural host is the fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus of the Pteropodidae family. It spreads from infected bats to humans and then through contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.

Recently, it was announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on 19 November. He will address the South India Natural Farming Summit, which will be hosted by the Farmers’ Associations in Tamil Nadu. The summit will also bring together 50 scientists specialising in organic agriculture. It aims to frame policies to expand natural farming across southern states. The summit seeks to build a people-driven movement for economically viable and socially inclusive agriculture. It will feature 300 exhibition stalls, live demonstrations, policy discussions and youth–women engagement. It is supported by national initiatives like Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati and Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana.

National Epilepsy Day is observed on November 17 every year in India to raise awareness about epilepsy. The day aims to fight stigma, improve understanding and promote better treatment for this neurological disorder. Government and private organisations conduct awareness events across the country. Epilepsy occurs when the brain’s electrical activity becomes abnormal. This leads to repeated seizures that can affect movement, behaviour or consciousness. The condition can occur at any age.

Recently, under Operation Fire Trail, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a major smuggling attempt of Chinese firecrackers. A 40-foot container at Mundra port was intercepted, falsely declared as “water glass set” and “flower receptacle.” Detailed checks uncovered 30,000 concealed firecrackers hidden behind genuine cargo. Similar smuggling attempts were earlier foiled at Mumbai and Tuticorin in October 2025. Import of firecrackers is Restricted and requires licences from Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). The importer lacked documents and admitted the smuggling; goods worth ₹5 crore were seized under the Customs Act, 1962.

Japan’s Sakurajima volcano recently erupted several times, sending ash up to 4.4 kilometres high. It is located on the southern tip of Kyushu Island near Kagoshima city in Japan. It is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes with frequent eruptions. Sakurajima is a stratovolcano made of layered lava and ash on a convergent plate boundary. It is an andesitic volcano with high gas content and very viscous magma at the edge of the Aira Caldera

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying recently announced winners of the National Gopal Ratna Awards (NGRA) 2025, highlighting current progress in India’s dairy sector. NGRA are the highest honours in the livestock and dairy sector and were launched under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission in 2021. They are given by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The awards promote excellence among farmers, Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS), Milk Producer Companies (MPC), Dairy Farmer Producer Organizations (FPO) and Artificial Insemination Technicians (AIT).
