The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN recently suspended the observer status of Russia. It is the international scientific laboratory which has the world’s largest atom smasher.
CERN announced that its 23 member states condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine is one of seven associate member states, and Russia, like the US, Japan and the European Union, had observer status in CERN.

Sahityotsav, the literature festival of Sahitya Akademi recently commenced at New Delhi. The Festival of Letters 2022 is being celebrated to commemorate 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
It comprised of various events including “The Rise of Young India” event, “Panel Discussion on Publishing in Indian Languages”, “Tribal Writers’ Meet”, National seminar on “Impact of Literature on Indian Independence Movement” and “Purvottari: North Eastern & Northern Writers’ Meet”.

A conservative former prosecutor, Yoon Suk-yeol is set to become South Korea’s next president after his win in the country’s presidential election.
The Election had a high turn-out, with around 77 per cent of the eligible population casting their votes. The results were also the closest in the country’s democratic history, with the vote count had a slim difference of less than 1 per cent.

‘The Smithsonian Institution’ is a group of museums and education and research centres created by the U.S Government. It is the largest such complex in the world located in Washington D.C.
The Smithsonian museum has recently announced it will return most of its collection of Benin Bronzes to their homeland Nigeria. There have been calls to return plundered artefacts to their countries of origin.

India’s oldest military school, Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), turned a hundred years old recently. It is located in the Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The military training institution was inaugurated in March 1922 by the then Prince of Wales. RIMC is the premier feeder institute for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy, Ezhimala. It provides public school education to students in the age group of 11½ to 18 years

The third edition of ‘Gender Samwaad’ was organised by the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Ministry of Rural Development.
Over 3000 State Mission staff and Self-Help Group (SHG) members from 34 states attended the session. The theme for this edition was ‘Promotion of food and nutrition security through women’s collectives’.

Union Home Ministry oversees the functioning of Office of Registrar General of India, which conducts Census.
The Government has recently notified certain amendments to Census rules to allow online self-enumeration in the upcoming Census and National Population Register (NPR).

Tripura government has announced a new scheme named “Mukhyamantri Chaa Srami Kalyan Prakalpa”.
It aims to ensure social security of over 7,000 tea garden workers of Tripura. The scheme assures housing, rations and financial support to the tea garden workers. It also provides them with facilities of state and central government schemes in a consolidated format.

The Geneva Conventions are a set of principles highlighting the norms for combatant behaviour during a war.
During the ongoing Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine, several civilian infrastructure and non-combatants have been impacted. There is growing concern around the issue of human rights violations.

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has proposed the rejuvenation of 13 major rivers across the country.
It includes Himalayan, Peninsular Rivers and one inland river – Luni. The rivers identified will be rejuvenated through ‘forestry interventions’ with an outlay of Rs 19,343 crore. The Report was prepared by ICFRE, Dehradun and will be funded by National Afforestation and Eco-development Board.
