Notes:
The renowned Egyptian feminist, novelist and psychiatrist Nawal Saadawi died recently at the age of 89. She was a famous writer, and a strong advocate of women rights in Egypt and the Arab world.
Born in 1931, she studied medicine at Cairo University and Columbia University in New York. She practiced medicine as a psychiatrist and has authored dozens of books including Off Limits (2020) and A Daughter of Isis (2018).

Notes:
The Union Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between the Jal Shakti Ministry of India and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan.
The MoC was signed for development of a long-term cooperation in the field of Water and Delta management. It also encourages implementation of joint projects between the two countries and exchange of information, knowledge, technology and scientific allied experience.

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment announced that it aims to launch a Poshan Abhiyan for the Elderly.
The Gram Panchayats and Urban Municipalities are the implementing agencies of the Scheme. It will provide nutrition support to the elders, who are not staying in the Old Age Homes and are victims of severe malnutrition.

To celebrate the spirit of Purvanchal and the people living in Delhi-NCR, an initiative called “Maati” was launched in the year 2018 in New Delhi.
This year, the 4th edition of the Purvanchal Festival “Maati” was celebrated in New Delhi. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha participated in the festival.

The University of Delhi organized a programme to commemorate 90 years of martyrdom of the leaders: Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru on ‘Shaheed Diwas’.
Union Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ virtually inaugurated the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Smarak. The existing collection of books on freedom fighters in the Bhagat Singh Smarak has been announced to be converted into “Shaheed Smriti Pustakalaya”.

Power and New and renewable energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh recently launched the Gram Ujala scheme in Varanasi. The scheme provides the world’s cheapest LED bulbs in rural areas at ₹10.
Earlier this week, the Minister launched the Gram Ujala scheme in Bihar. It ptovides LED bulbs at Rs 10, in exchange for working condition old incandescent lamps. Each household will get up to 5 LEDs.

The United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva has passed and adopted a resolution named ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka’.
22 members of the council have voted in favour of the resolution while India abstained from voting among the 47-member council.

A recent study with researchers from India and Brazil published a research article entitled “Large-scale connection to Deadly Indian Heatwaves.”
As per the study, the heat waves during the summer season of April and May could be due to the significant warming up of the Arctic region. They state that the Indian heat waves occur due to a mechanism called “Quasi-Resonant Amplification (QRA).

Notes:
India has the largest caseload in absolute numbers of Tuberculosis patients globally, estimated at 2.64 million patients. It also has 30% of the world’s TB cases.
As per the ‘India TB Report 2021’, India reported a 24% year-on-year fall in tuberculosis registrations last year, due to the Covid-led disruptions and lockdowns.

Notes:
The torch relay for the Tokyo Summer Olympic games 2021 has commenced from Japan. This relay is set to make its way across Japan for a duration of 121 days and would culminate the start of games in July this year.
The journey will take the torch to 859 municipalities in all 47 Japanese prefectures.
