Kamalpreet Kaur, the 25-year-old Discus thrower of India has made it into the Tokyo Olympic squad. During the qualifying events, she set a national record of 65.06m, improving her own record by four meters.
Another veteran Seema Punia finished second in the event with 62.64m.

International Day of Forests is observed by the United Nations (UN) every year on March 21, across the world, to raise awareness of the significance of all types of forests.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as the International Day of Forests in 2012. The theme of the International Day of Forests for 2021 is “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.”

The Union Ministry of Jal Sakthi is all set to implement the first river interlinking project in India – Ken Betwa Project. The project aims to link Ken river in Madhya Pradesh with Betwa in Uttar Pradesh.
The Ministry has sought for Public Investment Board’s approval for implementing the project as a national project.

Recently, the market regulator SEBI (Securities and Exchange Bureau of India) has relaxed the norms relating to valuation of Basel III AT-1 bonds.
The deemed residual maturity of Basel III AT-1 bonds will be 10 years until March 31, 2022. SEBI has increased it to 20 years from April 1, 2022 to September 2022. From April 2023, the residual maturity will become 100 years from the date of issuance of the bond.

American credit rating agency Fitch releases the report titled ‘Global Economic Outlook GEO’. In its recent edition, it has revised India’s GDP growth estimate to 12.8% for next fiscal.
Earlier, the ratings agency had estimated a growth rate of 11%. The reasons stated are a stronger carryover effect, a looser fiscal stance, and better virus containment. Fitch also expects GDP growth to ease to 5.8% in Fiscal Year 2023.

Mahatma Gandhi visited Odisha for the first time in the year 1921 (100 years ago) and had addressed a massive gathering of people as a part of his non-cooperation movement.
To commemorate this event, a commemorative postage stamp on ‘100 years of first visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Odisha’ has been released recently.

The Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde has recommended Justice N V Ramana as his successor, after being asked by the Central Government.
The CJI is due to retire on April 23. The Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will place the CJI’s recommendation before the Prime Minister, who will advise the President in the matter of appointment.

A resolution was led in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) by the European Union highlighting the ongoing human rights concerns in Myanmar. This has been co-sponsored by the United States of America.
The USA urged Myanmar’s military to restore the democratically elected government and to release the leaders detained in the country.

For the first time, the navies of India and Madagascar were involved in a joint patrolling of Madagascar’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Additionally, the two Navies conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX).
Indian Navy was represented by INS Shardul and the Madagascar Navy involved its ship Trozona during the event.

Every year, 24th March is observed as the “International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims” by the United Nations.
This day aims to honour the victims of human rights violations and promote the importance of the right to truth and justice.
