The ‘Zero Discrimination Day’ is observed annually across the world on March 1, by UNAIDS. The day was first celebrated on March 1, 2014.
This year, UNAIDS is focussing on the urgent need to take action to end the inequalities remaining in the world.The symbol for Zero Discrimination Day is the butterfly.

Notes:
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways launched the real-time monitoring system of toll plazas at national highways across the country. It will be used to measure the Daily Congestion Index for each plaza and overall congestion across national highway network in real time.
It will also collect real time data on high peak hours’ traffic. The purpose is to reduce congestion and improve efficiency of FASTag usage.

Notes:
The mass nesting of the Olive Ridley turtles began in Puducherry coastline. The traditional migration season of the turtles delayed due to climate change or change in the climatic conditions because of the influence of Cyclones Nivar and Burevi.
The turtles have been classified as vulnerable in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Notes:
Chicxulub crater is an impact crater buried underneath Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It was formed after the large Chicxulub impactor hit the Earth more than 66 million years ago. Space dust in this crater confirmed the role of the impactor in the mass extinction of dinosaurs.
The recent study connected the space dust and high concentration of worldwide iridium deposits at the time of dinosaurs’ demise to provide this conclusion.

Notes:
Physarum polycephalum is a single-cell slime mold. It was recently found to be capable of saving memories despite the absence of nervous system.
This finding deviates from the traditional assumption that memories are held by only by those organisms with a nervous system.

The government has recently notified comprehensive amendments to the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017.
As per the amendments, the insurance brokers are brought within the ambit of the Government. It also allowed policyholders to file online complaints. The scope of complaints also include deficiencies in service by insurers, agents, brokers and other intermediaries.

Notes:
The Jharkhand state government for the first time presented an outcome-based budget. Under the mechanism, 11 departments have been given targets and responsibilities, the results of which will be measured by the end of next financial year.
The departments have submitted a detailed document on the work they are planning to do in the next fiscal.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fiji, for co-operation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
The MoU provides for cooperation in various areas including promotion of joint ventures between private sectors of both countries. It includes exchange of research personnel, technology and infrastructure.

BrahMos is a medium-range supersonic cruise missile designed, developed and produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture company set up by India’s DRDO and Russia’s Mashinostroyenia.
It can be launched from submarines, ships, planes or land-based platforms. Philippines signed pact with India recently for possible purchase of this missile.
