The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) is celebrating its 23rd Foundation Day on 19 June 2026. It is a not-for-profit organization established under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and registered under the Companies Act, 2013. It was created to promote internet penetration in India and strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure. NIXI facilitates the exchange of domestic internet traffic among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other network operators.

Notes:
Operation Vajrapat has been launched by the Varanasi Range Police in Uttar Pradesh to dismantle criminal networks and their digital presence. The operation covers Jaunpur, Ghazipur, and Chandauli districts. A major focus is on digital surveillance, resulting in the removal of 554 social media accounts allegedly used to glorify crime and spread fear. The initiative aims to curb gang culture, strengthen intelligence-based policing, and build a comprehensive database for continuous monitoring of criminal networks.

The 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to take place in Gurugram, Haryana, on 25–26 June 2026 under its BRICS Chairship 2026. Energy Ministers and senior officials from all 11 BRICS member countries will participate. The meeting aims to strengthen cooperation in energy security, sustainability, and innovation. Three key priorities of the meeting are: Energy Security and Sustainability, Energy Access and Equity and Technology and Innovation. India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 is guided by the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

Recently, studies have shown that Biochar can increase crop productivity by 10–30% and improve soil water-holding capacity by 10–25%, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Biochar is a carbon-rich, granular material produced by heating agricultural waste or crop residues in low oxygen condition. It provides a sustainable method for agricultural waste management and carbon sequestration. Biochar can store carbon in soil for 100–1,000 years, making it an effective long-term carbon sink. Its porous structure improves soil fertility, water retention, and microbial activity. It also has applications in carbon capture, construction, and wastewater treatment.

Ministry of Home Affairs launched four digital policing applications to strengthen India’s criminal justice system. The applications are Abhigyan, CrPI (Criminal Procedure Identification), e-Prosecution 2.0, and e-Forensics 2.0. These applications aim to integrate policing, forensic investigation, criminal identification, and prosecution management into a unified digital system. The system will enhance coordination through platforms like CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System) and Cri-MAC (Crime Multi Agency Centre).

The Sahariya Tribe was recently in the news when the President interacted with members of the tribe at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The Sahariya are recognized as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in India. They are also known by names such as Seher, Sair, Savar, Saonar, and Sahra. The tribe primarily inhabits forest and village areas of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. They generally live in separate settlements called “Seharana”, which consist of clusters of houses.

Scientists have found that 3I/ATLAS is an ancient interstellar comet that likely formed 10–12 billion years ago in a primordial planetary system. It is the third known interstellar object discovered passing through our Solar System, after 1I/’Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). The comet was first detected by a NASA-supported telescope in Rio Hurtado as part of the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey. It is only passing through the Solar System and will leave permanently after its brief encounter with the Sun. 3I/ATLAS has been confirmed as an active comet, surrounded by a visible coma of dust and ice particles.

Six youth-led startups won the 8th Youth Co-Lab National Innovation Challenge 2026, recognising scalable and high-impact innovation solutions. The initiative is jointly led by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India and Citi Foundation, in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, and implemented by T-Hub Foundation. The programme promotes youth-led innovation aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, more than 350 startups from 28 states participated in the challenge.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has amended the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026. The reforms aim to reduce compliance burden, promote trust-based governance, and improve ease of doing business in the healthcare sector. Under the amendments, criminal prosecution for minor procedural lapses has been replaced with an administrative penalty system. The term “fine” has been replaced with “penalty” in key sections, introducing graded and proportionate enforcement mechanisms.

Notes:
Scientists have recently discovered a new species of walking shark named Hemiscyllium dudgeonae. The species was found in the waters of Milne Bay, near the southeastern tip of Papua New Guinea. Locally known as “kadedekedewa” (lazy shark), it uses its fins to walk along the seafloor and move between shallow tide pools. Walking sharks belong to the genus Hemiscyllium and are found in tropical waters around Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. They inhabit shallow coastal habitats and have very limited movement, often spending their entire lives within a small area.
