Kerala became the first state in India to launch a dedicated Senior Citizens’ Welfare Department. The department was created by the newly formed United Democratic Front government and officially came into existence on May 20, 2026. Elderly welfare responsibilities were shifted from the Social Justice Department to the new specialised department. The initiative is supported by the Kerala Elderly Commission Bill. Kerala also established a quasi-judicial State Elderly Commission to protect senior citizens from neglect, exploitation, and abuse.

Amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, Israel recently pushed deeper into Lebanon and captured the historic Beaufort Castle along with the surrounding strategic ridge. Beaufort Castle, also known as Qalaat al-Shaqif or the “Castle of the High Rock,” is a medieval fortress located near Nabatieh in southern Lebanon. The castle was originally built by Crusaders in the 12th century and later came under Muslim, Mamluk, and Ottoman control. It is considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Near East and has strong defensive architecture with a high castle and a low castle.

Rajeev Krishna has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh. He became the first permanent police chief of Uttar Pradesh since 2022. Rajeev Krishna is a 1991-batch IPS officer and had been serving as the acting DGP since May 2025 after succeeding Prashant Kumar. He is also serving as the Director General of the Vigilance Establishment. The last regular DGP of Uttar Pradesh was Mukul Goel, who was removed from the post in 2022. Since 2022, Uttar Pradesh had four acting police chiefs before this appointment.

The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region launched Mission Senehjori to transform Assam’s Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile ecosystem. The mission is being implemented in collaboration with the Government of Assam, Central Silk Board, the Ministry of Textiles, and other central organisations. The initiative aims to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to weaving, branding, exports, and tourism. Muga Silk is known as the world’s only naturally golden silk and is India’s first GI-tagged silk product.

Gujarat Police launched Operation Delta Hunt to identify and take action against Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in the state. Under the operation, 362 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested, while over 782 suspected individuals are being questioned. The operation targets illegal immigration networks and individuals considered a threat to national security. Gujarat Police is using technology and human intelligence for the operation and has prepared a database of over 6,200 suspected individuals to support investigations.

Microsoft has unveiled the Fairwater AI Data Centre in Mount Pleasant. The facility is a $7.3 billion, 315-acre AI data centre designed to showcase sustainable AI infrastructure. The centre uses a two-storey vertical design with dense GPU deployment to improve efficiency, reduce land use, and lower communication latency.

On World Environment Day 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 18 Namo Oxygen Parks in Delhi. The initiative was launched under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign to promote urban greening, improve air quality, and encourage public participation in environmental conservation. The Namo Oxygen Parks are designed to act as urban green lungs, enhancing biodiversity and providing recreational spaces.

Scientists recently used the James Webb Space Telescope to map weather patterns on WASP-94A b. WASP-94A b is a gaseous exoplanet located about 700 light-years from Earth. The study revealed distinct morning and evening weather systems in its atmosphere. The discovery was made possible by JWST’s advanced infrared observation capabilities. The findings provide valuable insights into atmospheric circulation and climate processes on distant planets.

K. S. Bharat (Kona Srikar Bharat) has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 32. The wicketkeeper-batter represented India in 7 Test matches between 2023 and 2024. He was part of India’s squad in the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia. He became the first wicketkeeper in Ranji Trophy history to score a triple century, making an unbeaten 308 for Andhra.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is observed annually on 5 June. The day aims to raise awareness about safety at level crossings, where roads and railway tracks intersect. It promotes responsible behaviour among road users, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists to prevent accidents. The theme for 2026 is “Alert Today, Safe Tomorrow”.
