The Children’s Climate Risk Report 2026, released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), assesses how climate change impacts children globally, with a focus on multiple environmental hazards. The report states that around 392 million children in India (92%) are exposed to extreme heat, while 89 million face recurrent heatwaves. India records a high climate hazard exposure score of 9.21/10, with extreme heat at 10/10 and air pollution at 9.94/10, showing severe vulnerability. Drought risk is also high at 8.84/10, indicating overlapping climate threats. The report highlights the urgent need for child-centric climate adaptation in schools, healthcare, and public policy frameworks.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a redevelopment plan for Powai Lake in Mumbai, with consultancy support from AECOM Asia Company Limited. Powai Lake is an artificial lake located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was constructed by the British in 1890 by damming the Mithi River to augment Bombay’s water supply. The lake is surrounded by the Powai Bird Sanctuary and serves as an important habitat for resident and migratory birds, besides supporting Marsh Crocodiles and the conservation of the Indian Mahaseer.

Recently, 15 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific adopted the Mombasa Declaration to strengthen global efforts against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. The declaration was adopted during the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC) held in Mombasa, Kenya, from which it derives its name. It calls for greater transparency in fisheries by improving access to information on fishing vessels, ownership, and licensing. Its objective is to protect marine ecosystems, ensure sustainable fisheries, and safeguard the livelihoods of millions dependent on fishing.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj organised a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme on Nirbhay Chetna from 17–19 June 2026 in New Delhi under the Nirbhaya Fund project. Nirbhay Chetna is a national initiative aimed at sensitising male elected representatives on women’s safety, dignity, rights, and gender equality. It was launched by Ministry of Panchayati Raj. It is part of the broader Nirbhay Raho initiative (launched on 11 March 2026).

The Indian Coast Guard (Indian Coast Guard) celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026 (International Day of Yoga 2026) through its flagship initiative “Yoga Sangam 2026.” The celebrations aligned with the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” promoting holistic health, resilience, and well-being. Yoga sessions were conducted across all ICG ships and establishments, involving thousands of personnel and their families. The sessions included asanas, pranayama, and meditation, focusing on fitness, stress management, and mental clarity for high-pressure operational duties.

World Rainforest Day is observed annually on 22 June to raise global awareness about the importance of rainforests and the need for their conservation. It was launched in 2017 by the Rainforest Partnership to encourage collective action for forest protection. The day highlights the role of rainforests in regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining life on Earth. The theme for 2026 is “The Forest Within You”, emphasising the deep connection between human well-being and forest ecosystems.

The inaugural Indian Athletics Awards 2025 were recently held, organized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Neeraj Chopra and Parul Chaudhary were named Best Athletes (male and female). Shahnavaz Khan and Pooja received Best Emerging Athlete awards. Lifetime Achievement Awards were conferred upon legends like P. T. Usha and Anju Bobby George. The event was attended by international sports dignitaries and highlighted India’s growing global presence in athletics.

The annual Mela Kheer Bhawani is recently celebrated in Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir, on the occasion of Jyeshtha Ashtami. It is one of the most important festivals of the Kashmiri Pandit community dedicated to Mata Ragnya Devi. The main celebrations are held at the shrine in Tulmulla, attracting thousands of devotees. Devotees offer kheer, milk, flowers, and sacred leaves as part of rituals. The festival symbolizes faith, cultural identity, resilience, and communal harmony among Kashmiri Pandits.

Recently, volunteers cleaned the historic Nabha Fort, an 18th-century monument in Punjab, highlighting renewed demands for its conservation and tourism development. The fort is located in Nabha city of Punjab and is linked to Maharaja Ripudaman Singh and the Phulkian dynasty. It served as the royal residence and administrative centre of the Nabha princely state. The fort was expanded over 150 years, with contributions from Maharaja Hira Singh.

International Olympic Day is observed every year on 23 June. The day promotes Olympic values such as friendship, excellence, and respect through sports participation worldwide. The 2026 global campaign theme is “Let’s Move – You Can Do This!” It encourages youth to overcome self-doubt and build self-confidence through physical activity and sports. The celebration aims to promote healthy lifestyles and increase mass participation in sports.
