The Union Minister of Women and Child Development has launched the Gender Budgeting Knowledge Hub to support gender-sensitive planning across India. It is a digital platform developed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The aim is to help policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders use gender-disaggregated data and tools for better planning. The portal offers policy briefs, best practices, and resources to promote gender equity in budgeting. It supports both Central and State-level planning with a focus on gender inclusion.

World Refugee Day is observed globally on 20 June to honour the courage and strength of refugees who flee their countries due to conflict or persecution. The theme for this year is “Solidarity with Refugees”, encouraging people to go beyond words and take real action to support them. Recently, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) India held a special event at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in New Delhi. This international day was designated by the United Nations to show respect and support for refugees across the world.

Delhi University has launched a new scheme called Janajati Immersive Holistic Intervention for Novel Development (JAIHIND) to help Scheduled Tribes (ST) students from Classes 9 to 12. The scheme gives training in basic computer skills and helps with the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) application process. The first batch has 25 students, including 12 girls and 13 boys from Ukhrul district in Manipur, selected based on merit. This initiative aims to reduce digital barriers and promote inclusive higher education.

International Yoga Day 2025 is celebrated globally on Saturday, June 21, marking the summer solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere that symbolizes light, energy, and balance in yogic philosophy. The theme for 2025 is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” focusing on the link between personal well-being and planetary health. The day encourages yoga as a tool for healing, sustainability, and holistic wellness.

President Droupadi Murmu recently inaugurated Rashtrapati Tapovan and Rashtrapati Niketan in Dehradun. She also opened public facilities like a visitor centre and cafeteria and laid the foundation of Rashtrapati Udyan at Rashtrapati Niketan. A book on biodiversity of these places was released, listing over 300 plant species and 170 animal species. Rashtrapati Tapovan will open to the public from June 24 and Rashtrapati Niketan from July 1.

World Rainforest Day is observed on June 22 to spread awareness about the need to protect rainforests, which are vital for climate, biodiversity, and human life. World Rainforest Day was founded in 2017 by the Rainforest Partnership, a non-profit based in Austin, Texas. In 2024, the World Rainforest Day Pledge Program was launched to encourage climate action through community-led efforts. In 2025, people are urged to become “Planet Walkers” by filming and sharing walks through forests or parks on social media to raise global awareness.

Recently, scientists from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, developed a next-generation device that produces green hydrogen using only solar energy. Green hydrogen is a clean fuel that can help decarbonize industries, power vehicles, and store renewable energy, but producing it affordably at scale has been difficult. The CeNS device splits water molecules using earth-abundant materials without fossil fuels or expensive resources, making it sustainable and scalable.

Recently, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated a two-day National Conference of Estimates Committees of Parliament and States and Union Territories (UTs) Legislative Bodies in Mumbai. It was highlighted that these committees play an important role in improving governance and pushing administrative reforms. Nearly 90 percent of the recommendations made by the committees for citizen welfare have been implemented. The use of modern technology was encouraged to further enhance committee functioning.

Recently, Candida tropicalis, a major fungal pathogen in India and globally, was found using chromosome changes to resist common antifungal drugs like fluconazole and voriconazole. Candida tropicalis is a yeast species from the Candida genus and causes serious infections with high mortality rates. It lives in tropical and subtropical marine environments like seawater, marine plants, and fish intestines. It is also found in human guts, fruit surfaces, soil, and various foods. It mainly affects people with weak immune systems or those with neutropenia, a condition of low neutrophil white blood cells.

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched the ‘Vidya Shakti’ programme on a pilot basis to assist underperforming students in government schools and colleges. It uses technology and innovative methods to provide extra coaching in Mathematics, Science, and English after school hours. Currently, it is running in 4,424 Zilla Parishad, Government, and Municipal schools, and 576 KGBVs, Residential, and Model Schools. The main goals are to improve learning outcomes, reduce dropout rates, and increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER).
