The schedule for the Women’s Asia Cup Hockey 2025 has been announced and the tournament will be held in Hangzhou, China from 5th to 14th September. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will start their campaign against Thailand on 5th September. India is in Pool B with Japan, Thailand, and Singapore, while Pool A includes China, Korea, Malaysia, and Chinese Taipei. India won the Bronze medal in the last edition and is aiming for the Gold this time. Winning the Asia Cup will give Team India direct entry to the 2026 Women’s Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) Hockey World Cup.

Recently, the Indian Army launched Operation Shiva in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure full security for the 38-day-long Amarnath Yatra beginning on July 3, 2025. This sacred pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave shrine at 3,888 meters attracts thousands of devotees every year. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) introduced Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards for tracking pilgrims.

The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded in Brasilia, Brazil, on June 5 with strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. The Indian delegation was led by Lok Sabha Speaker and included senior parliamentarians and officials. The forum included 10 member countries—India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. India was given the chairmanship to host the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in 2026.

A silent “Save Powai Lake” human chain planned by locals and nature lovers was recently cancelled after Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asked for an event fee of Rs 11,000. Powai Lake is an artificial lake in northern Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was created by constructing two dams across hillocks at the southern edge of the Western Ghats. It is part of the Powai Bird Sanctuary and is home to many rare birds like Woolly-necked Stork and Peregrine Falcon.

The 113th session of the International Labour Conference takes place from 2–13 June 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the annual meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations agency for world of work. The conference brings together tripartite delegations from 187 member countries, including representatives of governments, employers, and workers. It serves as the ILO’s highest decision-making body and discusses global labour standards and social justice.

Guatemalan authorities recently evacuated over 500 people as Fuego Volcano released gas and ash. Volcan de Fuego, meaning “Volcano of Fire” in Spanish, is located in Guatemala and is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. Fuego Volcano has erupted over 60 times since the year 1524, showing a long history of intense volcanic activity.

According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Maharashtra and Karnataka together accounted for 51% of India’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in 2024–25. Maharashtra received the highest FDI at 19.6 billion, which is 31% of the national total. Karnataka came next with 6.62 billion in overseas investment. They were followed by Delhi (6 billion), Gujarat (5.71 billion), Tamil Nadu (3.68 billion), Haryana (3.14 billion), and Telangana (3 billion). Total FDI inflow rose 14% to 81.04 billion in 2024–25, the highest in three years.

Recently, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) hosted the 5th Stakeholder Consultation on Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Methodology (AI RAM) in India. AI RAM stands for Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Methodology. It is a framework to measure how prepared India is for adopting and using Artificial Intelligence (AI). RAM, or Readiness Assessment Methodology, uses both numbers and expert opinions to evaluate the strength of a country’s AI ecosystem. It works as a diagnostic tool to improve laws, policies, and institutions supporting AI development.

At the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, Paris, Union Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh launched SAHAV, a digital ocean data portal to promote transparent and science-based ocean management. United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held from June 9–13, 2025, aims to support Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Notes:
The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has recently given its “in-principle” approval to the Etalin Hydropower Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project is located in Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, which is part of the Eastern Himalaya Global Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. The Etalin project will involve construction of two gravity dams – one on the Dri River and the other on the Talo (also known as Tangon) River. The total power generation capacity of the project is 3,097 Megawatts (MW).
