Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma launched the ‘Vande Ganga’ water conservation campaign on June 5, 2025, coinciding with World Environment Day and Ganga Dussehra. The campaign will run till June 20 to raise public awareness and promote water-saving efforts across all 41 districts. Activities include cleanliness drives, Tulsi plant distribution, plastic-free pledges, tree plantation, and worship of rivers and water bodies.

The Chhattisgarh government has approved the ‘Chhattisgarh Homestay Policy 2025-30’ to promote tourism in rural and tribal areas. This policy focuses on Bastar and Sarguja, which are tribal-dominated regions rich in natural beauty and biodiversity. It was launched during ongoing anti-Naxal operations in the Maoist-affected Bastar region. The policy promotes tribal culture through homestays and handicrafts. It will generate income for locals and supports the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative to boost rural tourism

Recently, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched the Waste Picker Enumeration App under the National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme to empower waste pickers. This digital platform will identify and support waste pickers by giving them formal identity, health insurance, skill training, and livelihood access. NAMASTE scheme now aims to enumerate 2.5 lakh waste pickers and integrate them into India’s formal sanitation and circular economy systems.

Recently, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched the National Plastic Waste Reporting Portal. This digital platform captures the entire plastic waste management process, including collection by waste pickers, processing, and final disposal. It enables real-time, nationwide access to data from Urban Local Bodies and District Panchayats across India. The portal helps in better planning, monitoring, and implementation of plastic waste management strategies.

Recently, Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council. Their two-year terms will start in January 2026 and last until the end of 2027. They will join existing non-permanent members Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, serving through 2026. These new members will replace Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, whose terms end in December 2025. The Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members with veto power: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Recently, during the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2025 in Geneva, India expressed full support for the Second World Health Organization (WHO) Global Traditional Medicine Summit, which will be hosted in New Delhi in December 2025. This summit, organized by the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre, aims to align stakeholders, share evidence, and accelerate learning in the field of traditional medicine. The summit will explore how traditional medicine can restore balance in an era of instability, focusing on scientific innovations, including AI and biodiversity protection.

The Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) organized the 3rd International Conference on “Arbitrating Indo-UK Commercial Disputes” during London International Disputes Week (LIDW) 2025. ICA is one of India’s oldest arbitral institutions, established in 1965. It was created under the Government of India’s initiatives and with support from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). ICA is a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, operating as a not-for-profit organization. Its main goal is to promote quick, amicable, and cost-effective resolution of commercial disputes through arbitration and conciliation.

Residents of Milam village in Uttarakhand face severe access problems after an avalanche damaged the Bailey bridge over the Gaokha River. A Bailey bridge is a modular bridge with pre-built parts for quick assembly. It was invented by English civil engineer Donald Coleman Bailey in 1941. Bailey bridges are strong, portable, and versatile, designed for fast construction in tough conditions without heavy machinery.

Recently, the President of India appointed Shri T. Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as a part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission (XVIFC). He will serve either till the Commission submits its report or until 31st October 2025, whichever comes earlier. His appointment follows the resignation of Shri Ajay Narayan Jha, a full-time member, due to personal reasons. The 16th Finance Commission (XVIFC) was formed on 31st December 2023.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT) recently reported the first flowering and seed set of asafoetida, also known as heeng, at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh. This confirms that asafoetida has successfully adapted and been domesticated in Indian soil for the first time. Asafoetida, scientifically called Ferula assa-foetida, is a perennial herb that takes about five years to flower. The plant grows well in cold and dry climates like those in Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia, which are its native regions.
