Notes:
The 113th session of the International Labour Conference takes place from 2–13 June 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the annual meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations agency for world of work. The conference brings together tripartite delegations from 187 member countries, including representatives of governments, employers, and workers. It serves as the ILO’s highest decision-making body and discusses global labour standards and social justice.

A Chinese ship recently ran aground due to severe weather near Thitu Island, raising alert levels among Filipino soldiers in the disputed South China Sea. Thitu Island, also called Pag-asa Island in the Philippines, lies within the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The Spratly Islands are claimed entirely by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and partially by Malaysia and the Philippines. Thitu is the second largest natural island in the Spratlys and the biggest of the nine occupied by the Philippines.

World Accreditation Day (WAD) is celebrated annually on June 9. World Accreditation Day (WAD) 2025 was celebrated by the Quality Council of India (QCI) at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. QCI is India’s national body for accreditation and works through National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). It partners with global bodies like International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF) to meet global quality standards. The 2025 theme was “Accreditation: Empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)”.

Himachal Pradesh has launched a Border Tourism initiative to promote sustainable tourism in tribal areas near the Indo-China border. The initiative will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during his visit to Shipki-La village in Kinnaur district. It is developed with the Union Government to support inclusive growth in remote border areas. Domestic tourists and locals can now access sites in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti like Shipki-La, Lepcha-La, Gue Monastery, and Chitkul.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited, a state-run energy company in India, has signed an agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to create an energy transition roadmap. Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is a global initiative launched by the United Nations (UN) in 2011. It is a partnership involving governments, private companies, and civil society to promote clean and accessible energy. SEforALL is an independent organization hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Sri Lanka is currently celebrating the sacred Poson Poya festival, which marks the historic arrival of Buddhism to the island over 2,000 years ago. The festival is observed on the full moon day of June and commemorates the first sermon preached by Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka, to King Devanampiyatissa at Mihintale. A central message of the Poson Poya festival is ‘Ahimsa’ or non-violence, reminding people of the timeless value of peace, life, and mutual respect in today’s conflict-ridden world.

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies’ Twenty20 (T20) record-holder for runs and appearances, retired from international cricket on June 10, 2025, at age 29. He scored 1,983 runs in 61 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 2,275 runs in 106 T20 Internationals. Pooran hit his career-best T20 score of 98 against Afghanistan and surpassed Chris Gayle as West Indies’ top T20 run-scorer. He hit the most sixes (40) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for Lucknow Super Giants.

The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has recently given its “in-principle” approval to the Etalin Hydropower Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project is located in Dibang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, which is part of the Eastern Himalaya Global Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. The Etalin project will involve construction of two gravity dams – one on the Dri River and the other on the Talo (also known as Tangon) River. The total power generation capacity of the project is 3,097 Megawatts (MW).

The India Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, has been ranked among the top five pavilions along with the United States, Italy, Japan, and France. It highlights India’s rich cultural heritage, innovation, and sustainable development in a vibrant and engaging way. The pavilion includes sections on heritage, Ayurveda, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and more. It has been curated by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). The World Expo will continue till 13th October 2025.

The Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) in the North Arabian Sea on June 9 and 10, 2025. India deployed INS Tabar, a stealth frigate, along with a submarine and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. The United Kingdom’s Carrier Strike Group included HMS Prince of Wales and frigate HMS Richmond. The naval drill involved helicopter coordination, tactical manoeuvres, anti-submarine warfare, and officer exchanges. This shows deepening defence ties and shared commitment to maritime security.
