The Global Slavery Index 2023 was published recently. According to this index, on any given day in 2021, as many as 50 million people were living in “modern slavery”.
Among these 50 million, 28 million suffer from forced labour and 22 million from forced marriages. Of these 50 million, 12 million are children. India has 11 million people in modern slavery.

The Philippines’ most active volcano -Mayon Volcano- was gently spewing lava down its slopes, alerting tens of thousands of people.
More than 12,600 people have left the communities within a six-kilometre radius of the Volcano’s crater in mandatory evacuations since volcanic activity increased last week.

The world is observing International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13 as the United Nations effort to stop the brutalities against people with albinism.
Albinism is a genetically inherited condition resulting in little or no melanin in the skin, hair, and eyes, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. The theme of this year’s celebration of International Albinism Awareness Day is “Inclusion is strength.”

On 14 June 2023, the World Blood Donor Day was celebrated throughout the world. It is an annual event by the WHO, which commenced in 2005. The Theme for this year is “give blood, give plasma, share life, share often”.
This Day provides a special opportunity to celebrate and thank voluntary blood donors around the world and become a major focus for action towards achieving universal access to safe blood transfusion.

The Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) is an online platform, under the  Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. It is available to the citizens 24×7 to lodge their grievances to the public authorities on any subject.
The 13th monthly report of CPGRAMS for the month of May 2023 has been released by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. The report offers a comprehensive examination of various types and categories of public grievances, as well as the way they were addressed.

According to a recent study, the devastating health consequences stemming from the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy persist and affect generations who were not directly exposed to the toxic gas.
Even after nearly forty years since the tragedy, subsequent generations suffer from disabilities and cancer.

Indian Maharatna PSU – NTPC Limited which is the largest power generation company in India, has made significant progress in Forbes’ “The Global 2000” List for 2023.
The company has progressed by ascending by 52 places to reach the 433rd rank in the ranking, from its previous position of 485th rank in 2022.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology has launched Vaishvik Bhartiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) fellowships programme.
The programme aims to connect the Indian STEMM diaspora (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) with Indian academic and R&D institutions for collaborative research. The fellowship would be awarded to outstanding scientist/technologists of Indian origin (NRI/OCI/PIO) who are engaged in research activities in their respective countries.

During a special meeting of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society, a decision was made to modify its name to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.
The meeting was chaired by Rajnath Singh, the Union Defence Minister and Vice-President of the Society.

Notes:
The National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) has raised ₹10,000 crore via maiden issuance of listed bonds of 10-year duration at a coupon rate of 7.43 per cent.
The development finance institution’s infrastructure bonds were oversubscribed by approximately 4.7 times, against the base issue of ₹5,000 crore. This is the largest debt issuance by an All India Financial Institution (AIFI).
