Jacques Peyroles, originally a lawyer, transitioned into a career as a journalist and later a novelist, adopting the pen name Gilles Perrault.

India’s HS Prannoy finished runner-up at the Australian Open Super 500 badminton tournament after losing a three-game thriller to China’s Weng Hong Yang in the men’s singles finals.
The 31-year-old player from Kerala had beaten Weng in a three-game play to claim the Malaysia Masters in May.

A report by Climate Risk Horizons titled ‘Still Unprepared’ said that India’s major banks remain unprepared to confront climate risks.
This comes despite the country facing extreme weather events on 314 of 365 days in 2022. The analysis ranks banks on several criteria, including a Fossil Fuel Exclusion Policy, Emissions Disclosure, Climate scenario analysis and Net Zero Targets.

China’s cyberspace regulator said that it has issued draft rules to oversee the security management of facial recognition technology in the country, after concerns raised in public about overuse of the technology.
The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said facial recognition technology can only be used to process facial information when there is a specific purpose and sufficient necessity and with strict protective measures.

The Haryana state government has intended to construct a dam costing Rs 6,134 crore, to avoid another flooding event caused by the Yamuna in Delhi and nearby Haryana regions.
This dam will feature a 14-km reservoir and will be situated 4.5 km ahead of the Hathnikund Barrage in the Yamunanagar district.

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) will be renamed as the Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) after the IIM (Amendment) Bill 2023 was passed by both Houses of the Parliament.
This makes NITIE the 21st IIM in India and the second in Maharashtra, following IIM Nagpur.

Every year, World Lion Day is observed on August 10. The day was first established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue – the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions.
The Day is observed annually on a global scale to raise awareness about their conservation and protection. It serves as a platform to educate people about the challenges faced by the lions across the world and to promote efforts to conserve them as well as to celebrate.

The bilateral naval exercise ‘Zayed Talwar’ aims to enhance the interoperability and synergy between the Indian Navy and UAE Navy.
INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand have reached Dubai in the UAE to participate in the ‘Zayed Talwar’ bilateral drill with the UAE Navy.
