Notes:
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has proposed to merge Assam Rifles with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and to serve under the operational control of the MHA. At present, the Assam Rifles (a Central paramilitary force) is under the administrative control of the MHA and operational control of the Army, i.e. the Ministry of Defence. The Army is opposed to this proposal.

The 15 year-old Shafali Verma from Haryana has become the youngest Indian cricketer to score a half-century in international 50 & surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 30-year-old record.She achieved this feat by scoring 73 runs off 49 balls in the first T20I against West Indies at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Saint Lucia.

In Switzerland, the 50th anniversary of the World Economic Forum (WEF)  Annual Meeting is being held in Davos in January. Over 100 Indian CEOs, several political leaders and many Bollywood stars are expected to participate in the meeting. The annual meeting of rich and powerful from across the world is expected to be even a bigger affair this time because it would be its 50th anniversary.

The World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) is celebrated every year on 10 November to highlight the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. The 2019 theme is “Open science, leaving no one behind”.

Paleontologists have recently discovered the rare bones of huge Jurassic sea predator “Pliosaurs” in a cornfield in the village of Krzyzanowice in Poland. The remains of pliosaurs are rare in Europe. The ancient sea monster measured up 30 feet long and lived about 150 million years ago. They had powerful, large skulls and massive jaws with large, sharp teeth. Their limbs were in the form of fins and were mostly found in the prehistoric seas that covered modern-day Europe.

Thomas Dennerby from Sweden has taken charge as Head Coach of Indian Women’s U-17 team for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. He has rich coaching experience of 30 years in which he guided Sweden women’s national team to a 3rd-place finish in the FIFA World Cup in 2011, and a quarterfinal spot in the 2012 London Olympics.

The 7th edition of the North East Festival (NEF-2019) was held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi on 11th November. The aim of the 3-day fest is to showcase and create awareness about India’s North-East, and to promote entrepreneurship and tourism. The festival was an attempt to bring the best of the region under one roof and build bridges.

The 39th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF-2019) has started at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi with theme ‘Ease of Doing Business’. In the 14-day Trade Fair, the status of ‘Partner Country’ has been accorded to Afghanistan and South Korea is the Focus Country. Bihar and Jharkhand are the focus states.

G Kamala Vardhana Rao, an IAS officer 1990 batch from Kerala Cadre, has been appointed as new CMD of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).The ITDC is a hospitality, retail and education company owned by Government of India, under Ministry of Tourism. It came into existence in October 1966 and owns over 17 properties under the Ashok Group of Hotels brand across India.

The World Kindness Day (WKD) is celebrated every year on 13th of November to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us. Kindness is a fundamental part of the human condition which bridges the divides of race religion, politics, gender and zip codes. The day was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of nations’ kindness NGOs. The theme for 2019 edition is “Empathy, encouraging people across the globe to better understand “the pains of others” and touch their lives “positively”.
