The Birhor tribe of Jharkhand is divided into two sub-classes: uthlu and thania. Uthlu are nomadic hunters who roam forests for roots and game. Thania are settled, building permanent huts near villages, and are also called jaghi or janghi. This classification is based on lifestyle and settlement patterns. The Birhor tribe is distinct from other tribal groups like the pahari, which means hill-dwellers and is not related to Birhor sub-classes.
