Ponduru Khadi Receives GI Tag Recognition

Ponduru Khadi, a rare hand-woven cotton fabric from Andhra Pradesh, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant milestone for India’s traditional Khadi sector. The recognition is expected to enhance global visibility, ensure legal protection, and improve market access for artisans associated with this centuries-old craft.

GI Tag Granted to Preserve Authenticity

The GI registration for Ponduru Khadi has been awarded in favour of the “Khadi and Village Industries Commission” by the Geographical Indications Registry. The tag provides legal protection to the fabric, safeguarding it from imitation and misuse while certifying its geographical origin. Ponduru Khadi is produced exclusively in Ponduru village of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh and is locally known as Patnulu.

KVIC Welcomes Recognition as Sectoral Milestone

KVIC Chairman “Manoj Kumar” described the GI tag as a matter of pride for the entire Khadi fraternity. He acknowledged the guidance of Prime Minister “Narendra Modi”, stating that sustained policy focus has helped traditional Khadi products gain national and international recognition. He added that initiatives such as Vocal for Local and Aatmanirbhar Bharat have revitalised artisan livelihoods and restored dignity to indigenous crafts.

Unique Craftsmanship of Ponduru Khadi

Ponduru Khadi is woven entirely by hand using locally grown Hill cotton, Punasa cotton, and Red cotton. The processes of cleaning, spinning, and weaving are carried out manually, preserving ancestral skills passed down generations. A distinctive feature of this fabric is the use of the jawbone of the Valuga fish for cleaning cotton, a technique unique to this region. The fabric is also known for its exceptionally high yarn count of 100–120, reflecting superior fineness and durability.
