PMAY-U Crosses 1.25 Crore Houses Sanctioned

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0 are India’s flagship urban housing schemes under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). On 9 August 2026, the combined sanctioned housing count under these schemes crossed 1.25 crore, while more than 1 crore houses were completed and handed over to beneficiaries.

PMAY-U Framework

PMAY-U was launched for urban housing and covers Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Lower Income Group (LIG), and Middle Income Group (MIG) beneficiaries in statutory towns and notified planning areas. The scheme uses four main verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS), and Affordable Rental Housing (ARH).

PMAY-U 2.0 Sanctioning Process

The 8th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) under PMAY-U 2.0 was held on 6 August 2026 at Sankalp Bhawan, New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, MoHUA, and approved more than 2.09 lakh additional houses for EWS families across 16 States and Union Territories.

Under the latest approvals, about 1.42 lakh houses were sanctioned under BLC and 67,045 houses under AHP. BLC provides financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh per beneficiary for construction of pucca houses on self-owned land.

Implementation Components

BLC supports individual house construction by eligible beneficiaries on their own land. AHP covers housing projects developed by public or private agencies in partnership with States and Union Territories. ISS provides interest subsidy support, and ARH addresses rental housing needs for urban migrants and workers.
