Pakistan and Egypt Renew Cooperation After Years of Stagnation
Pakistan and Egypt have agreed to revitalise their long-dormant bilateral partnership by expanding cooperation across economic, commercial, cultural and defence sectors. The decision emerged during a two-day visit by Egypt’s foreign minister Badr Abdelatty to Islamabad, signalling renewed strategic engagement after years of limited interaction.
High-Level Diplomatic Talks Resume
Abdelatty held detailed discussions with Pakistan’s foreign minister and deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar. Both sides reviewed regional and global developments, including the situations in Gaza and Sudan, as well as issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. The talks marked one of the most substantive bilateral engagements in over a decade.
Revival of Institutional Mechanisms
Dar noted that the Pakistan-Egypt Joint Ministerial Commission had not convened since 2010, nor had formal political consultations taken place during that period. Political consultations are now expected to resume in early 2026. Both governments also agreed to revitalise institutional frameworks to ensure consistent high-level dialogue.
Strengthening Trade and Business Links
Pakistan announced plans to share a list of 250 business houses with Egypt to enhance commercial outreach. Visa facilitation for Pakistani entrepreneurs will be accelerated, with the list expanding to 500 within three months. A Pakistan-Egypt Business Council will be formed to institutionalise private sector cooperation, followed by the establishment of a bilateral business forum set to meet in Cairo in mid-2026.
