OmanSat-1: Oman’s First National Communications Satellite Launched

Oman has achieved a national milestone with the launch of OmanSat-1, its first communications satellite. The project strengthens the country’s digital independence, expands high-speed secure connectivity, and supports long-term ambitions under Oman Vision 2040 to build a competitive, technology-driven economy.

Collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space

OmanSat-1 has been developed through a strategic agreement between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Airbus Defence and Space. Built on the adaptable OneSat platform, the satellite can be reconfigured while in orbit to adjust capacity and coverage. Operating in the Ka-band, it will serve Oman’s territory and economic waters, along with neighbouring regions in the Middle East, East Africa and Asia, boosting regional communication capability.

National Management and Operational Structure

Space Communications Technologies, owned by the Oman Investment Authority, has been appointed to execute and manage the programme. It will serve as the national operator once the satellite is active. A specialised Project Management and Follow-up Office has been established to coordinate technical work, prepare ground systems, and ensure smooth delivery of satellite services to both public and private sectors.

Strengthening Digital Sovereignty and Local Expertise

The mission enhances Oman’s digital sovereignty by enabling secure, independent communication networks and reducing reliance on external providers. It aims to improve internet quality, extend coverage to remote regions, and safeguard critical services. The programme emphasises capacity building, offering training across all stages of the mission and integrating local companies—particularly SMEs—into the supply chain. Universities will collaborate with project partners to advance research and build specialised academic programmes.

Exam Oriented Facts
