Odisha CM inaugurates 36th Konark and 15th International Sand Art festivals

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the 36th Konark Festival and the 15th International Sand Art Festival on Monday, marking the beginning of five days of cultural celebration. The twin festivals highlight the state’s artistic traditions through classical dance, music and sand sculpture.

Launch of the twin cultural festivals

Organised by the tourism department in collaboration with Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and OTDC, the festivals aim to promote Odisha’s vibrant heritage. The Konark Festival, held against the iconic Sun Temple backdrop, is a longstanding showcase of India’s classical dance forms, while the sand art event brings global sculptors to Chandrabhaga Beach.

Highlights from the inaugural evening

The opening ceremony featured an Odissi recital by Sonali Mohapatra and artistes from Nrutya Upasana Pitha. Performances ranged from interpretations of the Hanuman Chalisa to classical compositions such as ‘Saranga Pallavi’. The evening concluded with ‘Chari Yuga Devi’, depicting the power and grace of Maa Durga through synchronised choreography.
