NSO Launches MCP Server to Democratise Official Statistics
The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has launched the beta version of its Model Context Protocol server for the eSankhyiki portal, marking a significant step towards making India’s official statistics more accessible, interoperable and AI-ready. The initiative aims to enable citizens, researchers, businesses and policymakers to integrate official data seamlessly into modern analytical tools.
What the MCP Server Enables
Model Context Protocol is a technology that allows users to connect directly with datasets through their own AI tools and applications. Instead of downloading large data files, users can query datasets in real time, automate reports using current statistics and access multiple datasets through a single connection. This reduces friction in data access and allows users to focus more on analysis and decision-making.
Datasets Available in the Beta Release
The beta version of the MCP server currently includes seven major statistical products: Periodic Labour Force Survey, Consumer Price Index, Annual Survey of Industries, Index of Industrial Production, National Account Statistics, Wholesale Price Index and Environmental Statistics. According to the NSO, additional datasets from the eSankhyiki portal will be onboarded progressively in the coming months based on user feedback and technical readiness.
Boost to Data-Driven Governance
The launch is part of NSO’s broader effort to strengthen India’s data infrastructure in support of the Viksit Bharat vision. By enabling direct machine-readable access to official statistics, the MCP server is expected to strengthen data-driven policymaking across all levels of government and empower citizens and businesses with timely, reliable information. The initiative also demonstrates how government data can be made compatible with the AI tools already in widespread use.
Important Facts for Exams
- National Statistics Office functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
- eSankhyiki is India’s national portal for official statistics.
- Model Context Protocol enables AI-based access to datasets without file downloads.

Alignment with India’s AI Vision
The timing of the launch, ahead of the India–AI Impact Summit 2026, highlights NSO’s proactive approach to using emerging technologies for real-world impact. The initiative aligns with the objectives of Working Group 6 on Democratising AI, chaired by “Saurabh Garg”, which focuses on expanding equitable access to AI resources and data. By removing barriers between users and official statistics, the MCP server reinforces the government’s commitment to transparent, technology-agnostic and inclusive data access.
