NHRC Launches Online Internship on Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission of India started its Online Short Term Internship Programme for September 2025. From 896 applicants, 80 students from 21 States and Union Territories were chosen. The two-week programme runs from 22 September to 3 October. It aims to deepen youth understanding of human rights promotion and protection in India.

Programme Objectives and Themes

The internship focuses on raising awareness about constitutional values and various human rights. It covers civil, political, social, and cultural rights. Emerging challenges like climate change, artificial intelligence, cybercrime, and gig economy exploitation are key topics. The programme stresses the dynamic nature of human rights and the need for continual public engagement.

Leadership and Key Messages

NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal inaugurated the programme. He brought into light the importance of justice, empathy, and dignity. He urged interns to engage actively and internalise human rights principles. He also pointed out that business and human rights, labour rights, and climate-induced displacement are critical contemporary issues.

Curriculum and Learning Methods

Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak outlined the curriculum. It includes lectures, virtual tours of institutions like Tihar Jail, shelter homes, and police stations. Interactive activities are designed to enhance practical understanding. The programme teaches international human rights law, domestic challenges, and advocacy skills.

Expected Outcomes for Interns

Participants gain comprehensive knowledge of human rights frameworks. They learn to address modern challenges effectively. The internship prepares students to become informed and responsible human rights ambassadors. It encourages critical thinking and active participation in human rights issues.
