NHAI Rajmargyatra App Launches OneTag FASTag Portability

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launched OneTag, a FASTag portability service, on the Rajmargyatra app on 17 September 2026. The service allows a FASTag user to change the issuing bank without replacing the physical FASTag sticker fixed to the vehicle.

FASTag and Electronic Toll Collection

FASTag is an RFID-based electronic toll collection system used on India’s national highways. It is linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account and enables automatic toll deduction at toll plazas. The system is part of the National Electronic Toll Collection framework used across the Indian road network.

OneTag Service Features

OneTag was launched by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The service is designed for more than 130 million FASTag users and is intended to improve portability, consumer choice, and lifecycle management of FASTag accounts. The existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle remains unchanged after portability.

  • The user logs in to the Rajmargyatra app and enters the vehicle registration number to check eligibility.
  • The current bank sends a six-digit Mobile Verification Code for authentication.
  • The user selects a new issuer and completes KYC and wallet onboarding.
  • The previous issuer closes the old wallet and refunds any available balance after successful portability.

Institutional Framework

OneTag was jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). IHMCL is promoted by NHAI, and NPCI operates major digital payment infrastructure in India, including the Unified Payments Interface and RuPay.

Important Facts for Exams

  • FASTag uses RFID technology for automatic toll payment at toll plazas.
  • NHAI functions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • NPCI is the umbrella organisation for retail payment systems in India.
  • A six-month cooling period applies before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again.

Portability Rules and Account Management

OneTag portability keeps the vehicle-linked FASTag ID unchanged while shifting the issuer bank. The old wallet is closed by the previous issuer, and any remaining balance is refunded to the user’s account. The six-month cooling period applies to repeated portability of an interoperable FASTag.
