National Quantum Mission Achieves 1,000 km Secure Communication Breakthrough

India has achieved a significant milestone in quantum technology by successfully demonstrating a 1,000-kilometre quantum communication network under the National Quantum Mission. The breakthrough marks a major step towards developing ultra-secure communication systems, positioning India among leading nations in advanced quantum research.

About National Quantum Mission

The National Quantum Mission was launched by the Department of Science and Technology with a total outlay of ₹6003 crore for the period 2023–24 to 2030–31. The mission aims to build a robust ecosystem for quantum technologies by promoting research, innovation, and industrial development. It is one of the nine key initiatives under the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council.

Implementation framework

The mission is being implemented through the establishment of four Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) across leading institutions in India. These hubs operate on a Hub-Spoke-Spike model to ensure collaboration between academia, industry, and research organisations. This structure is designed to accelerate development and practical application of quantum technologies.

Focus areas of the mission

The National Quantum Mission focuses on four core domains. Quantum Computing is led by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Quantum Communication is spearheaded by IIT Madras in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Telematics, New Delhi. Quantum Sensing and Metrology is led by IIT Bombay, while Quantum Materials and Devices are coordinated by IIT Delhi. These areas collectively aim to strengthen India’s technological capabilities.
