Nagauri Paan Methi Registered as Community Farmers’ Variety
The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA) has officially registered “Nagauri Paan Methi” as a Community Farmers’ Variety. The announcement appeared in the February 2026 issue of the Plant Variety Journal. The registration grants statutory ownership and legal protection to the farming community of Nagaur district in Rajasthan. It recognises generations of farmers who have conserved and developed this unique crop in the region’s arid agro-ecology.
Recognition under PPV&FR Act
Nagauri Paan Methi (Trigonella corniculata L.) has been registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001. The community of farmers from Nagaur district has been recognised as the legal custodian of the crop variety. The application was represented by Geeta Devi, a woman farmer and Pradhan of the Panchayat Samiti in Mundwa. The registration formally acknowledges the collective innovation and conservation practices of local farmers who have maintained this plant genetic resource for generations.
Protection from Biopiracy and Seed Exploitation
The registration provides multiple benefits to farmers. It offers protection against biopiracy and unauthorised commercial use of the variety. Farmers will also gain safeguards against the sale of spurious or substandard seeds, a common problem in the absence of formal seed chains. Additionally, the community becomes eligible for benefit-sharing if the genetic resources of Nagauri methi are used in research or commercial products.
Support for Women Farmers and Community Rights
The recognition carries added significance as 2026 has been declared the International Year of Women Farmers by the Food and Agriculture Organization. The registration highlights the role of women farmers in conserving traditional crop varieties and strengthening rural agricultural systems. By granting community rights, the initiative reinforces farmer-led conservation and empowers rural women involved in seed preservation and cultivation practices.

Pathway to Geographical Indication and Export Opportunities
The registration is also expected to support the future Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of Nagauri Paan Methi. A GI tag could enhance market identity and help farmers secure premium prices. The variety has already been included in Schedule-I of the Spices Board of India with support from the DBT Biotech Kisan Hub initiative and NABARD’s AEFC programme. The recognition also corrects the earlier misidentification of the crop as “Kasuri Methi”, restoring its authentic identity in domestic and global markets.
