Mridangam Maestro Guruvayur Dorai Dies at 91
Guruvayur Dorai, a leading mridangam artiste and exponent of the Pudukottai style, died in Chennai on 10 October 2026. Born in Guruvayur on 2 July 1935, he began performing at eight and was active in Carnatic music for more than eight decades. Accounts gave his age as either 91 or 92.
Career and musical training
Dorai’s father encouraged him to learn the mridangam after he contracted polio at the age of five. His initial training was under Palghat Subbaiyar, followed by lessons from E.P. Narayana Pisharody. At eight, he made his arangetram, or debut performance, accompanying vocalist Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. He later studied under Palani Subramania Pillai and blended lessons from Pillai with his own technique.
Dorai regularly accompanied M.S. Subbulakshmi for many years. His concert collaborators also included Musiri Subramania Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, M.D. Ramanathan, M. Balamuralikrishna and T.R. Mahalingam. In the 1940s, he accompanied his sister, vocalist Guruvayur Ponnammal.
Mridangam and Carnatic music
The mridangam is a double-headed percussion instrument used as a principal rhythmic accompaniment in Carnatic music. The term layam refers to rhythm, while arangetram denotes an artist’s debut performance. Carnatic percussionists accompany vocal and instrumental music, supporting its rhythmic structure. Dorai was associated with the Pudukottai style and was particularly admired for his gumki playing, a resonant bass effect produced on the mridangam.
Awards and recognition
Dorai received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Kalaimamani award. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2025. The Padma Shri is one of India’s Padma Awards, which recognise distinguished service in fields including art, literature and education, and public affairs.
