Andhra Pradesh Approves Quantum and AI University Campus

Andhra Pradesh approved India’s first dedicated Quantum and AI University campus in Amaravati on 27 August 2026. The project will be developed by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, a Deemed-to-be University under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Institutional Framework

The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, or NIELIT, functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, commonly abbreviated as MeitY. The campus is planned as a specialised higher education and research facility for deep-tech disciplines.

Academic Structure and Courses

The university plans to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, diploma, and executive programmes. The proposed subject areas include Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, VLSI, and Semiconductor Fabrication.

Campus Plan and Funding

The project has an estimated cost of ₹730.70 crore over five years. MeitY will provide 100% Grant-in-Aid for the project. The campus is planned as a 1.25 lakh square foot Quantum Research, Innovation, and Incubation Block with solar-powered Net Zero features and 500-bed residential capacity.

Location and Interim Arrangement

The permanent campus is planned in Amaravati, while academic programmes will begin in September 2026 at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. Reports on land size and site location mentioned an 8.5-acre plot in Amaravati and a 10-acre site at Nidamarru.

The groundwork for the campus began on 20 February 2026 when NIELIT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Andhra Pradesh at the India AI Impact Summit. The projected intake is 8,250 learners over five years, including 1,650 students in degree programmes and 6,600 learners through skilling and certification courses.
