Mizoram Launches GBV Solve Project to Tackle Violence Against Women

The Mizoram government has launched the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Solve Project to address rising incidents of violence against women and promote gender equality in the state. Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Minister Lalrinpuii inaugurated the initiative in Aizawl, urging collective efforts to protect women and children and empower them through education and skills.

Sharp Rise in Gender-Based Violence Cases

Minister Lalrinpuii highlighted that reported cases of violence against women in Mizoram have increased sharply from 3,094 during 2022–2023 to 12,750 by February 2025. She called for urgent action to counter this alarming trend, emphasising that women’s empowerment contributes not only to family well-being but also to the broader progress of society. The minister underscored the importance of preventive education and institutional collaboration to reduce gender disparities and violence.

Collaborative Project for Social Change

The GBV Solve Project is a joint initiative between Aparajita and J-PAL South Asia, implemented locally by the Mission Foundation Movement (MFM). The project focuses on protecting women and children while spreading awareness about gender equality. It integrates community-based interventions, counselling support, and training programmes that aim to create a safer environment for women and children across Mizoram.

Focus on Education and Skill Development

In addition to addressing gender-based violence, the project promotes educational outreach for both boys and girls to foster respect and equality from an early age. Women beneficiaries will receive skill training to help them become financially independent. The integration of livelihood programmes aims to ensure that empowerment is sustainable, linking economic security with social safety.

The initiative seeks to establish a replicable model that integrates research, community involvement, and government support to combat gender-based violence and strengthen women’s rights across India.
