Military Combat Parachute System Completes 32,000-Foot Combat Jump
The Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS), developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), recently completed a successful combat freefall jump from 32,000 feet. This marks advancement in India’s defence technology. The jump was conducted by Indian Air Force test jumpers, proving the system’s efficiency and reliability. MCPS is now the only parachute system in the Indian Armed Forces capable of deployment above 25,000 feet.
Development and Design
The MCPS was developed by DRDO’s Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment in Agra and Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory in Bengaluru. It features advanced tactical enhancements. These include a lower descent rate and improved steering control. These features allow paratroopers to exit aircraft safely, deploy parachutes at set altitudes, navigate precisely, and land in designated zones.
Technological Features
The system integrates with the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). This ensures accurate navigation and operational freedom. MCPS is resistant to interference or denial of service from external adversaries. This capability is crucial for missions in hostile environments. The system’s design supports high-altitude jumps, making it unique in operational use by Indian forces.
Strategic and Operational Benefits
Indigenous development reduces reliance on foreign parachute systems. This lowers turnaround time for maintenance and repair. It enhances operational readiness during conflict or war. The MCPS’s success paves the way for further indigenous aerial delivery systems. This aligns with India’s broader goal of self-reliance in defence technologies.
Official Recognition and Future Prospects
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and the Armed Forces for this milestone. He brought into light its importance for India’s defence capabilities. Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman, called it a major step towards self-reliance in aerial delivery. The MCPS demonstration signals a new era for indigenous defence equipment in India.
