Manipur’s Major Development Projects Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated multiple development projects in Imphal, Manipur, with a total investment exceeding ₹1,200 crore. These initiatives aim to boost infrastructure, employment, and ease of living in the state. The projects include the Manipur Urban Roads Project and the Manipur Infotech Development Project, signalling a new phase of growth for the region.

Infrastructure Development

Manipur has witnessed a rapid increase in infrastructure projects since 2014. The Manipur Urban Roads Project, valued at over ₹3,600 crore, focuses on improving road connectivity in Imphal and surrounding areas. National Highway development and village road connectivity are progressing swiftly. New buildings, including the Civil Secretariat and Police Headquarters, have been constructed, enhancing governance and security.

Technology and Economic Growth

The Manipur Infotech Development Project, with an investment of over ₹500 crore, aims to encourage technology-driven growth. The IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Imphal is operational, promoting startups and tech industries. These efforts are expected to create new employment opportunities for the youth and boost the state’s economy.

Women Empowerment

Manipur’s unique tradition of women-led markets, known as Ima Keithel, is being strengthened with four new Ima Markets inaugurated. These markets support women entrepreneurs and reflect the state’s cultural heritage. Women’s empowerment is a central focus of development plans, seen as vital for Manipur’s progress and India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Social Welfare and Stability

The government has introduced measures to assist displaced families affected by violence, including approval of 7,000 new houses and a special financial package of ₹3,000 crore. Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata provide affordable accommodation for people travelling from the state. Projects to mitigate flood challenges are also underway to improve living conditions.

Sports and Youth Development

Manipur is recognised as a sports powerhouse. The National Sports University, the Marjing Polo Complex, and Olympian Park have been established to nurture athletic talent. Schemes like Khelo India and Olympic Podium support athletes with modern infrastructure. These initiatives aim to enhance youth participation and national pride.

Strategic and Historical Significance

Manipur holds a special place in India’s freedom struggle and defence history. The renaming of Mount Harriet to Mount Manipur honours the state’s martyrs. Soldiers from Manipur played key roles in military operations like Operation Sindoor. The government continues to promote peace, stability, and harmony between different communities within the state.

Regional and International Relations

The Prime Minister extended goodwill to Nepal, denoting the appointment of its first woman Prime Minister and the country’s democratic resilience. India and Nepal share a close bond rooted in history and culture. These diplomatic ties complement India’s focus on developing its North Eastern states like Manipur.
