Mumbai has added a major milestone to its transport infrastructure with the inauguration of the Mandale Depot for Metro Line 2B. The elevated facility is now Asia’s largest metro depot, designed to improve operational efficiency and strengthen connectivity across the city’s eastern and western corridors.

Massive Scale and Strategic Importance

Built across 30.45 hectares, the Mandale Depot can stable 72 eight-coach trains. The car shed operates on two levels, each capable of accommodating 36 trains. Its strategic location supports the DN Nagar–Mandale route, a corridor expected to ease congestion and enhance daily urban mobility.

Advanced Stabling and Track Network

The depot includes 29 km of internal track systems to manage large-scale operations. Its double-decker stabling layout maximises capacity within limited land. Three elevated viaducts streamline train circulation, making daily stabling, cleaning, and deployment faster and more efficient.

Inspection and Maintenance Innovations

State-of-the-art facilities support regular and specialised train overhauls. The depot has 10 maintenance lines, six inspection tracks and four bogie turntables. Heavy-duty storage systems and equipment allow technicians to carry out complex servicing without disrupting daily schedules.

Smart Systems, Environment Measures and Line 2B Progress

Daily and deep cleaning is automated through dedicated wash plants, while wheel profiling is done via a pit wheel lathe. A G+3 control centre monitors operations round the clock. Environmental safeguards include 175 KLD water recycling plants, underground utilities, and dust-control systems. The line’s Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch has begun trials, while full corridor commissioning is targeted from mid-2026 to late-2027.
