Malayalam Filmmaker R Sarath Dies at 65

Malayalam filmmaker, screenwriter and government officer R Sarath died on 7 September 2026 at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was associated with Malayalam cinema, documentary work and the Kerala government’s Information and Public Relations Department.

R Sarath made his directorial debut with Sayahnam in 2000. The film won seven Kerala State Film Awards and the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film, which is a national award in Indian cinema.

Documentary Work and Cultural Research

In 1996, Sarath received a Junior Fellowship from the Union Ministry of Culture for research on Kerala’s traditional murals. During this work, he discovered rare mural paintings of Raja Ravi Varma at the Kilimanoor temple in Kerala.

Films, Awards and Public Service

His Indo-Chinese co-produced Hindi film The Desire – A Journey of a Woman won the Best Narrative Feature Film award at the Geneva International Film Festival in 2011. Sarath retired in 2021 as Deputy Director in the Information and Public Relations Department of the Kerala government.
