Maharashtra Tops 6th National Water Awards 2024

Maharashtra has been named the top-performing state in the ‘Best State’ category at the 6th National Water Awards 2024, recognising its outstanding contribution to water conservation and management. The awards, organised by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, celebrate excellence in sustainable water resource practices across India. The winners will receive their honours from President Droupadi Murmu on 18 November 2025 in New Delhi.

Top States Recognised for Water Management

Following Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana secured the second and third positions respectively. The awards assess state performance on the basis of innovative water conservation projects, effective irrigation systems, rejuvenation of water bodies, and community involvement in water governance. Maharashtra’s integrated watershed management projects and promotion of efficient irrigation techniques were key to its win.

Comprehensive Categories and Participants

The National Water Awards cover a broad spectrum of categories including Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best Industry, Best Institution, and Best Individual for Water Conservation. In total, 46 awards will be presented across these segments to recognise contributions from diverse sectors and promote sustainable water resource use.

Special Recognition under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari 1.0

Telangana emerged as the best-performing state under the ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari 1.0’ initiative, completing an impressive 5.2 lakh water conservation structures. It was followed by Chhattisgarh with 4.05 lakh completed projects and Rajasthan with 3.64 lakh structures. These achievements highlight the growing emphasis on community participation in water resource management.
