Maharashtra Plans Single Parent Child Admission Category
Maharashtra is considering a separate “Single Parent Child” category in college admission forms for higher and technical education. The proposal was discussed on 13 June 2026, and the Higher and Technical Education Minister, Chandrakant Patil, said that a high-level committee will be formed for implementation.
Admission Form Changes
The proposed system includes a dedicated column in admission forms for identifying students from single-parent households. The measure is intended for colleges and technical institutions in Maharashtra, which has a large higher education network under the state department.
Student Support Measures
The proposal includes priority in hostel admissions, counselling services, and educational concessions for eligible students. The stated focus is on children of single mothers, who may receive support during the admission process and in campus accommodation.
State-Level Consultation Process
A special online meeting with principals from about 1,500 colleges in Maharashtra is scheduled for 17 June 2026. The meeting is meant to discuss registration procedures and ground-level issues related to identifying such students during admissions.
Policy Framework and Data Review
The Higher and Technical Education Department plans a statewide awareness drive for higher education institutions. A previous survey identified about 14,000 students from single-mother households in colleges and universities across Maharashtra, and this figure is under review for the proposed category.
