Magnus Carlsen wins third world chess title

The Norwegian has sealed his third consecutive victory in World Chess Championship after 3 weeks of game and tiebreakers in New York. He defeated Russian Grand Master Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin.

  • Karjakin had tied against Carlsen in 12 regular rounds but was finally defeated in the final phase of four games.
  • The prize money is $1.1 m which is divided between the two players. The winner gets 60% of the share.
  • It was in 1972 the victory of American Bobby Fischer over Russian Boris Spassky during World Chess Championship in Iceland came to be known as “match of the century”.
