KSRTC Wins PSU Award for ‘Dhwani Spandana’ Accessibility Initiative

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has been honoured with the Governance Now 12th PSU National Award in the “Excellence in Innovation” category for its accessibility initiative titled “Dhwani Spandana.” The award recognises the corporation’s efforts to improve public transport accessibility for visually impaired passengers. The recognition was presented during the Governance Now Awards ceremony held in New Delhi.

Innovative System for Visually Impaired Passengers

The Dhwani Spandana initiative introduces an onboard bus identification and navigation system designed specifically to assist visually impaired commuters. The system enables passengers with visual disabilities to identify buses and navigate their journeys more independently. By providing audio-based assistance and clear identification mechanisms, the initiative helps passengers board the correct bus and travel with greater confidence.

Implementation in Mysuru City Transport Buses

The system has been implemented in 200 Mysuru City Transport buses operated by KSRTC. The project was developed with technical support from GIZ Germany, which collaborated in designing and implementing the accessibility solution. By integrating assistive technology into the public transport network, the initiative demonstrates how transport services can become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Enhancing Mobility and Independence

Officials noted that the system significantly reduces the dependence of visually impaired passengers on others while travelling. It enhances safety, improves accessibility and promotes independent mobility in urban transport. The initiative has also contributed to increasing the confidence and freedom of movement for visually impaired commuters using city bus services.
