Krishi Sakhi Initiative Promotes Women Farmers’ Empowerment

In line with the declaration of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer by the United Nations through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited (AIC) has launched the ‘Krishi Sakhi Initiative’. The programme aims to empower women farmers, enhance their participation in agriculture and promote inclusive growth in the sector.

Objective and vision of the initiative

The Krishi Sakhi Initiative focuses on recognising the vital contribution of women in agriculture while improving their access to crop insurance and financial protection. It seeks to build awareness, strengthen resilience and encourage greater participation of women farmers in formal agricultural systems, especially insurance schemes.

Month-wise activities and outreach

The initiative follows a structured, year-long approach. In January 2026, AIC released an introductory video to generate awareness across digital platforms. In February, a walkathon was organised at the Head Office, where employees participated under the theme #AICforHer, symbolising solidarity and support for women farmers. In March, the focus shifted to grassroots engagement through workshops and awareness programmes highlighting crop insurance benefits.

Focus on awareness and inclusion

The initiative emphasises awareness campaigns on crop insurance, sanitation and hygiene in rural areas, particularly targeting women farmers and households. It also includes publication of articles, interviews and outreach activities aimed at improving knowledge and participation among women in agricultural practices and risk management.
