Kavita Chand Scales Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s Highest Peak
Kavita Chand from Almora district in Uttarakhand has created a landmark moment in Indian mountaineering by successfully summiting Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica. She reached the summit on December 12 at 8:30 pm local time, standing atop the 4,892-metre peak and advancing significantly towards the coveted Seven Summits challenge.
Historic Summit in Extreme Antarctic Conditions
Mount Vinson is regarded as one of the most remote and unforgiving mountains in the world. Climbers face extreme isolation, sub-zero temperatures, and unpredictable Antarctic weather. Kavita’s ascent reflects careful preparation and physical endurance in a region where rescue and logistical support are extremely limited. Her achievement has drawn admiration across India, particularly in Uttarakhand, where she hails from.
Expedition Route and Team Support
Kavita’s expedition began on December 3 with her departure from India. She reached Punta Arenas in Chile on December 4 and flew to Union Glacier on December 7. From there, she was transported to Vinson Base Camp at around 2,100 metres via a ski-equipped aircraft. The climb was led by renowned high-altitude guide Mingma David Sherpa, with operational support from Indian mountaineer Bharath Thammineni and his expedition company. A nine-member Indian team successfully completed the summit push after systematic acclimatisation.
Progress Towards the Seven Summits Goal
With Mount Vinson conquered, Kavita has taken a major step towards completing the Seven Summits, a challenge involving the highest peaks on all seven continents. She had earlier scaled Mount Elbrus in Europe. Carrying the Indian tricolour to the Antarctic summit, she described the moment as deeply emotional and a matter of national pride. She hopes her journey will inspire professionals to balance demanding careers with ambitious fitness goals.
