Karnataka Leads India in Wind Power Capacity Growth

Karnataka has emerged as a frontrunner in wind energy production in India. In the financial year 2024-25, the state added an impressive 1,331.48 MW of wind power capacity. This achievement was recognised during the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations in Bengaluru.
Karnataka’s Renewable Energy Milestones
Karnataka’s total installed wind power capacity now stands at 7,351 MW. This positions the state as a leader in India’s renewable energy sector. The recent addition of over 1,300 MW in a single year puts stress on Karnataka’s momentum in harnessing wind energy. The state aims to support India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The state has signed investment agreements worth Rs four lakh crore at the 2025 Global Investors Meet. This investment represents nearly 40% of Karnataka’s total investments. The state is preparing to implement 17 GW of wind power projects, with more than 5 GW planned under the Renewable Energy Cluster Programme. Infrastructure improvements include the establishment of over 20 substations and 400 KV corridors.
India’s Position in Global Wind Energy
India ranks as the fourth-largest wind power generator globally, with an installed capacity of 51.5 GW. The national goal is to reach 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. This includes a target of 100 GW from wind energy, with 30 GW expected from offshore sources. The country has also exported 3.5 to 4 GW of wind turbines and modules in the current financial year.
Future Directions
Ensuring a 24×7 power supply and maintaining grid stability are critical. The integration of wind, solar, and pumped storage systems will be essential. Competitive electricity tariffs and a focus on domestic manufacturing are also necessary for the growth of India’s green energy economy.
