Kamakhya Temple Corridor Project

The Kamakhya Divyalok Pariyojana is a temple corridor project for the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, Assam. It is being developed by the central government at a cost of Rs 498 crore. The project will ensure a complete overhaul of the pilgrimage experience at the Shakti shrine. It is expected to attract a large number of devotees and give a boost to tourism in the Northeast.

About Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple is one of the most revered Hindu shrines, located in Guwahati, Assam. Located atop the Nilachal Hill, it is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peeth associated with the legend of Goddess Sati. The presiding deity is Goddess Kamakhya, an incarnation of Sati. The temple as per history was built by King Narakasura. As per the official records available from 1565, the temple was rebuilt by Koch King Naranarayan. It is an important Tantric temple where the female reproductive organ of Sati is believed to have fallen. The annual Ambubachi Mela marks the deity’s menstruation period. The temple exemplifies Assam’s vibrant Shakti cult and draws innumerable devotees seeking blessings and spiritual solace.

About Ambubachi Mela

Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu festival celebrated at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam. It marks the yearly menstruation course of the presiding goddess Kamakhya and is believed to signify the fertility cult in ancient Assam. The four-day mela begins on the seventh day of the Hindu month of Ashadha and draws lakhs of devotees from all over India and abroad. During the period the temple remains closed as the goddess is believed to undergo her annual menstruation cycle.
