Justice Mahesh Sonak Takes Oath as Jharkhand HC Chief Justice

Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on Friday, marking a key judicial transition in the state. The oath of office was administered by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar at Lok Bhavan in Ranchi, in the presence of senior judicial and political dignitaries.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Birsa Munda Mandap in Lok Bhavan. It was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, sitting judges of the Jharkhand High Court, judicial officers, members of the Bar, and senior government officials. Justice Sonak formally assumed charge following the superannuation of former Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan on January 8.

Collegium Clearance and Judicial Tenure

Justice Sonak’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court was cleared by the Supreme Court collegium on December 18. With his elevation, he becomes the 17th Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court since its establishment in November 2000, reflecting continuity in the court’s leadership framework.

Professional and Educational Background

Born on November 28, 1964, Justice Sonak completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School in Panaji, Goa. He went on to earn a science degree from Dhempe College of Arts and Science and later completed his LL.B. in First Class from M.S. College of Law, Panaji, affiliated with the University of Bombay. Prior to his current appointment, he served as a judge of the Bombay High Court.
