ITDC Launches Tribal Homestay Capacity Building Programme

The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), under the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, inaugurated a Capacity Building Programme for Tribal Homestay Owners in New Delhi. The initiative marks a significant step towards promoting community-based tourism while enhancing the professional capabilities of tribal homestay operators across India.

Focus on skill development and sustainable tourism

The programme aims to improve service standards, enrich visitor experiences, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for tribal communities. It is being implemented through structured training by IHM Ashok, the hospitality education arm of ITDC. By equipping participants with essential hospitality skills, the initiative seeks to integrate tribal regions into India’s growing tourism ecosystem.

Participation and key highlights

The inaugural batch includes 40 participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Gujarat. Senior officials from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and ITDC attended the launch. A major highlight of the event was the release of the “Tribal Homestay – Operation & Development Manual 2026,” developed by IHM Ashok. The manual provides practical guidance on managing homestays and has been translated into Hindi and Gujarati to ensure wider accessibility.

Rising demand for experiential tourism

Officials highlighted the changing preferences of Indian travellers, who increasingly seek less crowded, nature-based and immersive experiences. The homestay model addresses the shortage of hotel infrastructure while enabling tourists to stay longer and engage with local culture. It is particularly relevant in tribal and mountainous regions rich in natural and cultural assets.
