NGOPV Programme and Shipbuilding Strategy
The NGOPV programme involves the construction of eleven advanced offshore patrol vessels at two major shipyards—Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. This parallel construction approach is aimed at accelerating delivery timelines and enhancing domestic shipbuilding capacity.
Capabilities and Operational Roles
These indigenously built vessels are designed for multi-domain operations, including maritime defence, coastal surveillance, search and rescue missions, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and anti-piracy operations. The NGOPVs will augment the existing fleet of offshore patrol vessels, strengthening India’s maritime security architecture.
